The minute he started acting like a sociopath or evil person, no. That may have been at 5 years old!

It's a pretty crappy attitude, to have no respect for anyone until they "earn" it.

This would mean no taking turns at intersections, interrupting people that haven't "earned" your respect, pushing people out of your way at the mall, or grocery store, etc....

But that's just my opinion.

It makes me wonder. There seems to be an obsession in America these days with "getting respect". Maybe it's not a prevalent in real life as it is in movies, tv and music? I'm not sure. But it seems sad that so many people are so concerned with the respect they think they ought to receive from others. If they had any respect for themselves they wouldn't care half as much what other people thought.

I try to be nice to everyone, but my respect must be earned. I have had many issues with teachers, they want me to respect them simply because they are older, then when I don't they get mad.

I believe there is a respect that should be shown soley based on the Humanity of another.

+111. For me this respect is grounded is seeing others as equal human beings. That would include social courtesy, and a degree of trust unless a person proves to be untrustworthy. But regardless of a person's bad behavior, I feel better about myself if I feel respect, and show as much respect as I can ,without setting myself up to be hurt or exploited.

If you don't cross me then you'll be treated fairly and with decency and respect. But if you want true respect and admiration from me you'll have to earn it.

However, one must always respect the value of other people. I believe strongly in equality for all men, and that every man should have rights which cannot be overruled by any greater power.

Respect is earned. Out of common courtesy, I still give everyone a measure of respect right off the bat.

When dealing with people older than me, I will automatically afford them a measure of respect. Even if they do not deserve it. I don't have to stop respecting someone who screws me, I just stop dealing with them. By older, I mean like my parents age and older.

As I type my answer, I think there are two different situations I am thinking of. When I meet someone for the first time, and with people I know for a bit.

I don't know. I tend to judge each person individually. The drunk on the bus who was trying to grab my leg so he could get up off the floor today? No respect for him. My physics professor who is always busy yet finds time to teach class AND is good at it AND will help us after class AND knows what he's doing? Respect.

But seriously, due to my upbringing, anybody older than me automatically gets my respect. Unfortunately, a large number of them lose it rather quickly based on demeanor, attitude, or other "***?" inducing actions or words.

Yep. Respect is earned, being polite is automatic. show your true colors and things can change one way or the other.

Except politicians, they start out lower than most. I seem to see them as criminals who just haven't been convicted yet. No mystery there I guess.
