Hey, maybe he's right. Some people are just knobs.

Not with me - I am indifferent, unless somebody behaves in a way that earns my respect!
That's how it is!
Who said anything about treating people with decency? I'm talking about respect here. Respecting someone is a far cry from merely being polite. So you don't believe in a basic standard of deceny that people should be treat with?

Politeness and common courtesy is a form of respect.
+1That's why I said what I said - so I am happy to be polite to people - but that doesn't mean I respect them!
To be worthy of respect means you have actually done something to earn that respect - otherwise you just deserve politeness or common courtesy!
I don't see what showing respect has to do with respect. Showing respect is just that -- a show. You do it because you want to be a well-oiled cog in the machinery of society rather than the sand gumming everything up. If I behave respectfully it doesn't mean that I respect a person, and it's not necessary to show your respect for someone for it to be real.If you don't show someone courtesy and act politely towards them you aren't showing them respect.

Not to me - in fact, I think a big part of being successful in any job is being able to show courtesy and be polite to people you really hate and for whom you have no respect whatsoever!!![]()
What other reason would you want....Just because you hate someone and dont agree with the way they act/talk is no reason not to give them proper respect.....
... you respect the fact they respect you enough to be polite...

Then you do respect them. You may not respect the person they are but you respect the business colleague. That's the way I see things anyway.
Courtesy is not the same as respect.
You can dislike someone, think their opinions are worthless and generally consider them to be a waste of space, but still be polite to them.
