I generally respect someone until they give me reason not to. Which of course has gotten me burned many times, when will I learn??

Yes.
The minute he started acting like a sociopath or evil person, no. That may have been at 5 years old!
It's a pretty crappy attitude, to have no respect for anyone until they "earn" it.
This would mean no taking turns at intersections, interrupting people that haven't "earned" your respect, pushing people out of your way at the mall, or grocery store, etc....
But that's just my opinion.
Well, I guess it depends. I try to be respectful towards strangers, but I do not put that in the same category as "respect."
I suppose by my definition, I tend to be courteous to others, and show to respect to those who have earned it, if that makes any sense.

This was my point, I guess. "social courtesy" is definitely what I was referring to.
I see this digressing into a battle of semantics, but I'd say trust must be earned (but that's pretty common-sense). "Respect", as used here, isn't very concrete. But yeah, it must be earned.
Everyone gets an equal amount of respect from me when I first meet them...then that level of respect either goes up, down, or stays the same depending on how the person is.

I meant that sometimes you just know if someone is worthy of your respect, right off the bat, or if they are not worth the air they breathe.
"For better or worse" meaning respecting them or not, I mean nothing marital about it.
