Sadly another hero gone. RIP Charlie Watts. Thank you for the decades of music.
If you've never seen this clip of the Stones recording Sympathy for the Devil, this will show you how crucial Charlie's groove was in shaping Mick and Keith's songs. Before Charlie sunk his teeth in, it was just a strummy 3 chord folk song.
1st-ever song we learned(?)/played(???) in my 1st garage band..."Jumping Jack Flash". As it was with many early garage bands, the drummer was the most advanced player. So, maybe 2 minutes of tune with about 10 minutes of a drum solo. 
Don't forget Watts & his Big Band stuff. I thought that pretty cool for him to do.

Sad for the stones to have lost the only musician in the band.
Uncalled for and a bit snobbish despite the "I'm only joking" wink face.
Sad for his friends and family including his wife of almost 60 years.

Why did you even bother to respond to this thread, then? Just to kvetch? Sure, they’ve put out plenty of suck ass albums at times, but they’re still the embodiment of rock and roll, even if they’re limeys. They took better care of American music than we often did.

R.I.P. Charlie I love LOVE LOVE The Album "Made in the Shade". And here is one of my all time favorite Stones songs live. A fabulous live clip of the Stones at what I consider their best time.
Oh no, someone has an opinion that isn't the same as mine now I have to get touchy. I like Watts. As a drummer and a human. His passing is sad. If it were the others I'd stay silent because I wouldn't care.
First Tom T Hall, then Don Everly, and now Charlie Watts; it's been a few days of loss for the music industry. Charlie was the glue that held the Stones together, and he was my favorite in the group. Cool, easy going, low key, and always right on the money. While the others went nuts at times, it was Charlie that was the steadying influence. He was one of the good guys that we bass players work with to help establish and hold down a solid groove.
RIP Charlie, we will miss you, and know you will make some terrific music on the other side.

In interviews he always came across as so unaffected and honest. Like he had no time for stardom b.s. He also came across as humble. That may be because as a drummer his heroes were jazz greats and that was his own high bar. Some time ago some started a thread asking which famous drummer would you like to be in a band with and Charlie Watts was one of my picks. He was crucial to everything that made the Rolling Stones a great (the greatest?) rock and roll band.
Actually, Brian Jones was the first.
I assumed they meant the first of the remaining members.
Given Mick's heart, Bill's predilection for jailbait, and Keith's relationship with booze, cigs, and falling out of trees ; Charlie seemed like a safe bet as last man standing.
(OK, we all know that Keith is going to still be thriving, after the cockroaches have deemed the planet uninhabitable).
