R.I.P Dave Carpenter

"...all of that hard living must have taken a toll on him". :(

I don't know any specifics about Dave.
But, yeah, I agree...I have had 2 friends pass away in their 40s because of the poor decisions they made while in their younger daze.

I recently picked up a Peter Erskine/Alan Pasqua disc with Dave on acoustic bass that is stunningly beautiful.

Can anyone recommend any discs with Dave's electric playing?

I have a live DVD with Holdsworth that Dave just slays on electric! There might be some youtube vids of it out there.

Dave played on the 2 "jazz" albums that Andy Summers put out called Green Chimneys [Monk] & Peggy's Blue Skylight [Mingus] that I know of for sure. I'm guessing pretty much anything that he did with Alan Holdsworth would have him playing EB.

I'm pretty late to this thread, but I also heard of Dave through the two aforementioned Andy Summers albums. I was just re-listening to his fat 6-string playing on Summers' version of Monk's "Shuffle Boil", thought to myself "who is this monster player" and googled his name, only to find out that he passed away 5 years ago. Quite a loss for the jazz world indeed.

...listening to James Taylor's At Christmas album-
A stellar rhythm section [Colaiuta, Larry Goldings, Gadd, Dave Grusin, Luis Conte, Michael Landau, John Pizzarelli, etc] that includes Jimmy Johnson & Dave Carpenter splitting up the bass chair.

Dang, what a shock! Dave was one of the most respected bassists in L.A., and although I never met him, I was always blown away by his playing on both upright and electric. Only 48 years old....serves as an unfortunate testament to staying away from drugs.

At least he left a great recorded legacy behind. Anyone interested in his playing should check out the Lounge Art Ensemble with Peter Erskine and Bob Sheppard.

Hi, I was just reading your post here.

What did you mean by "serves as an unfortunate testament to staying away from drugs?" Do you mean Dave Carpenter was drug-free and died young anyway, or do you mean he died young possibly as a result of substance abuse/dependence?

I don't like to spread rumors, and as I said I didn't know Dave personally, but my understanding is that he struggled with substance abuse for much of his life.
