I remember him from our teen-aged years. He lived about 30 miles away. I remember when he moved to Nashville. All-round good guy, monster player.

Also confirmed by Lee Sklar. Rhodes was a master-level player.
There's a a couple fortunate guys in my circle who worked with him in some capacity - they all remarked that he brought the level of musicality and true purpose up in the room as soon as he entered. Not in an intimidating way - he just brought that with him and all boats float higher in a rising tide. RIP.

Sadly another monster player is lost this year. We are losing to many these days, it's always a shock, especially when they are known by all as great person to be around, not just a great talent. Condolences to his family and

I met Michael when I first moved to Nashville 27 years ago. Fearless player. Great guy. Funny as hell. A pocket as deep as the Grand Canyon.

Sunny Came Home...serves the song the whole way....big warm tone with gliss and slides in the right places to give it a slinky sensuous feel, and ties the sections together with just the right pizazz. What a player...

As an outsider (I don't know most country or pop music of the past few decades), I didn't learn of Michael Rhodes until about 15 years ago. At that time I bought a significant bass guitar that he formerly owned, so I started to learn about his work and read interviews with him.
It became clear to me that Rhodes was the cat as a player, but also a cool, smart, and very interesting person. Thereby I learned about Vinyl Kings, too. In any case, I can well imagine why you all held him in such high regard, both personally and as a player. My condolences.

Easily in my top 5 all time favorite bass players. First saw him in The Nerve & been a fan ever since. A dear friend heard the news before me this afternoon & called me knowing I would be hurt to hear the news. Sad day.
You know, it's getting to be a real drag reading all these R.I.P. threads so far this year.
Wow, that's very sad! I've been a big fan for years, but just the past couple days spent more time listening to this masterpiece from a live video recording he did with Robben Ford during covid when they couldn't head to Brazil in person.
