rare(?) Fender Japan Jazz Bass request

Hi,

I'm interested in buying this bass, but I've never seen one of this before. The salesman told me that he bought this bass in Tokyo in 2004 and that all is original, except the pickups which he changed to Fender Vintage JB's.

Not sure about the pedigree, but it's a very attractive bass IMO.
I really like the grain and color.

Never seen this particular model, but Fender Japan has a lot of different and unique models. Very likely that it's legit and a very fine bass at that. Not to mention the seller does have a 170 feedback at 100% positive... which helps

Where's the copper ground strip, Kenji?

And BTW, is there really a "Fender Japan Custom Shop" as stated in the ad?

Could this be a stripped Fender Japan JB62-FL (3TS) with new pups and a modified "hidden" ground wire?
Just a suggestion, not sure. Looks like ash, though (or the japanese equivalent, don't remember what it's called) but it could also be an "ashy" looking alder body.

Thanks for the compliment but my knowledge on Fender Japan instruments is still very limited. I still have to uncover more mysteries hehehe. Fender Japan is as mysterious as the ninjas. They have a lot of secrets hehehe. Anyway, the copper ground strip was missing probably because the original pickup was replaced (as mentioned by the OP) and the first owner took it out. The body looks more of alder to me than ash though. The "Japanese ash you were referring to is called "sen" and its no longer used today. Sen was used during the pre-Fender Japan era on Fender copies by local manufacturers (Yamaha Pulser Bass from '77-81 almost exclusively used sen for bodies) as well as the early MIJ Fender and Squier JV series and SQ series from '82-83.

The stuff made for the Japanese domestic market is now far superior to what we get in the USA. This bass looks to have my favorite Gotoh Kluson style tuner with the adjustable gear lash...not used on any Fenders that we get here, but they used them on the Schecters and ESPs in the 80s that had Fender headstocks.
