These basses have turned out really awesome.

I can't paint to save my life. Runs, hair, thick final coats that are permanently sticky.

I'm jealous guys.

Is that the Capri Orange from Gracey's paint? I've thought about using that color and am thinking it might be good for when I redo my ESP B5-JR.

Yeah, many of these spray paints won't ship overseas anyway... you can't buy the UK one and i can't buy the US one. I think it's because of the flammables, making it hard (expensive) to ship.

The type of paint and the nozzle makes a huge impact.
The one I used produces a very very very fine mist at 50-60cm. This allows you to lay very thin coats very uniformly that dry fast. You can lay coat after coat with short waiting times, and the result is pretty good without much effort.

I have seen other spray paints that just won't work the same and they are easy to over spray

What worked for me with the Gracey's was to set the can in a bowl of warm water before use and between every coat with the water running slowly on hot. Seemed to mist better and dry faster with thinner coats.

Gearing up to do another one if I win this MIM P on eBay... millah, who did you work with in NYC to do your clear coat? I might "outsource" that phase of the job, as it got COLD and is less fun to keep the windows open...!

As I finished my orange can, I was looking around at my other basses "ok, which one can I paint now?"

I just bought a BC Rich Mockingbird, as I like the dual P configuration. It's boring black... ;-)

I have decided to paint my cheapo Frankensquier Jag (Currently black) with some kind of blue metalflake, along the lines of the Ernie Ball "Blue Dawn" finish they offered on the 2007 LE models (if I recall correctly). My plans is to strip the poly, prime with white, paint with silver, and then the blue metalflake on top of that, followed of course by clearcoat. Any advice on brands? If it works out I will probably do a similar finish, perhaps in red or orange, on my very boring black Hellcat VI.

Daphne blue, yeah! And take it to my local blues open mic :-D

If your bass is in good shape, so you don't have chips dings etc, I would not bother stripping.
My orange one still has the shoreline gold underneath. Providing it's in good shape and clean, your primer will coat it very easily.

I was going to, but I tried a bit on the back and it was solid... so I did not. I only fine sanded it after the primer to make it smooth for the orange coats.

Just won a Music Man Sterling (US) on Ebay for a pretty sweet price, partially due to cosmetic damage. There is a little chunk missing from the finish on the bottom front edge of the body near the input jack. I'm debating if this will be a good rattle can refinish project. I'd probably strip or sand it down this time. From my previous experience painting my fretless, I've already seen firsthand how difficult it can be to "patch up" a crack in the finish, let alone one that looks like it might go all the way through the wood.

I'll post pics when I get it and you guys can tell me what you think!

I've really wanted to do a rattle can refinish for a long time.

I have a squier p that's black but I really want it to be green. However I think it would look sweet if the green was worn away down to the original black in places.

So basically make it look relic'd but instead of it getting worn down to the wood it gets worn down to the old black poly.

I think that would look pretty sweet.

To do this should I paint it all green then toss the body around a bit?

Was thinking of making a bracelet out of sand paper as well as putting sand paper on my belt buckle and just playing with a pick really hard and exaggerate it like crazy for a while to get it worn down to the black but still look natural.

Gonna give this a go and come back with it in a few weeks.

Ok, as soon as the weather warms up I'm going to spray both my strat and my bronco. I think I know what must be done to shoot the bodies but I want a gold annodized pg for the bronco, nobody makes one so I'm thinking about spraying the stock plastic one gold. Any thoughts? Suggestions for prepping and spraying the plastic? How about ideas to make it look like a real gold anno pg?

Hey KRYLON users. Can you tell me if these products are compatible with each other? I want to refinish this lefty P-bass Special. Was looking for Daphne blue or close to it...how does the Blue Ocean Breeze compare? Seems like it would be nice color for a refinish. If the primer and paint are compatible but the clear coat is not, what brand is recommended? Any tips or suggestions?
