The ashtray covers the strings and string holes as the strings were too long so I did the string thru to fit and the ash tray covers the front as I had rounded the front holes to reduce the break angle and didn't want to repaint the factory paint.
No decal since its not a real MM, its a DIY kit bass to tide me over until I can afford a real Bongo and/or if Sterling ever makes one.
I’m starting a bass project using A Kiesel alder body.

From my own finishes similar to this one - it depends on what you want. This example is probably textured, which feels nice and holds the color well. I did one like it and had it clear-coated by Pat Wilkins and it came out great - high-gloss with a lot of depth/detail. I like both versions but for feel and 'player natural wear" potential - satin textured is the bomb.

I've posted this on other threads but it relates here so here goes - this '68 Coral Deluxe Bass was stripped to wood and coated with glossy clear when I got it. By scraping layers from the control cavity I found it had been refinished (probably DIY) 3 times in its 51 years. Last in line over the wood was white primer and coral - which I replicated and distressed in relation to the wear of the parts. Stripped/sanded off the glossy clear and applied; 2 coats Zinsser Cover Stain [oil-based primer/stain blocker/bond], 2 coats Krylon Dual "Watermelon" [paint & primer], hand applied/rubbed Old Masters "Golden Oak" oil-based wiping stain, (distressed) and clear-coated with Re-ranch clear satin lacquer. Looks 51 years old and feels great.
Looks great. I.ve put oak over some finishes. Lends a"20 yrs of unfiltered cigarettes" look to things. Can you do my mustang for me?

Thanks! Glazing is a decorative arts staple - there's many ways to approach it with lots of different product options depending on the desired result.This is what the Watermelon colour looked like - it was pretty pinkish to start with. The Golden Oak amber'd it up sufficiently and the hand-rubbed quality is deliberately not perfect which lends to its believability of an aged patina. Lacquers naturally amber over 50+ years even if not associated w/smoky bars. I once had a job repainting a bars tin-ceiling that was dark caramel brown. Once I got up there to clean it (TSP) it was originally white. Talk about a nasty job!
Had my first go with a kit bass and it turned out trollop, then got me a busted epi tb body and neck. Had to do a lot of filling so had to spray the wings satin black. Fine sanded the centre and sprayed with clear nitro. Put a white pg on cos the clear one didn't work

Looks good - you can put a thin layer of any material under the pg like wood-grain craft paper. Could work with your finish. "turned out trollop" - translation please!
