Sorry, no. Spray primer and color, then tape off, then flake, watch for overspray, then clear.

You've been a huge help. Would it make sense to mask off the stripe area while I spray the color, and then mask everything else when I spray the flake?

It seems like overkill to me, but I'm concerned about building up too much flake so the finish will be uneven. Or will spraying enough clear coats make it a non-issue?

I wouldn't recommend pre masking. I've never heard of anyone doing that. The clear will cover it. What colors are you using?

Thank you! I have Pacific Green Metallic, and Bright Aqua Metallic. Leaning towards the Aqua. I'm going for an Ocean Turquoise-ish thing. I also have some of the Effex clear that Duplicolor makes.

The bass will have a white pearloid pickguaard and a maple fretboard

I'll be joining the club soon - just waiting on my surf green paint from Ohio Valley Nitro.

I bought an MIM Jazz. Wasn't really my favourite colour.

I've been reading through a lot of the posts on here, so I thought I'd give the rattle can paint job a try. Basically I sanded down t he existing finish with 800 grit, cleaned it carefully with isopropyl alcohol, then began painting white primer over it. I figured primer would probably be the best bet since I'm going from a dark colour to a light colour.

I made a mistake and damaged my other bass, so I decided to throw this one together so I have something to play until the paint comes.

Still need many things, but I like it a lot! Can't wait to finish it.

It took way longer than I wanted it to (free time consumed by infant son), but I’m finally done and really happy with how it turned out. Some imperfections, but overall I’m thrilled. In addition to the refinish, I also swapped out all the hardware for black.

Update on the Varathane water-based spray. It's, well, watery, meaning it runs a good bit. And the spray nozzle is bad. I swapped it with one from StewMac and even that was no help. I had to smooth it out with a foam brush, but that looked OK. I'm now trying it just sprayed into a container and brushed on.

Question for all the other duplicolor dudes out there.

Can I spay all my colors and clear in 1 day, or do i have to let things cure first?

My cans came in, and while I was initially leaning towards the teal with a racing stripe, I think I'm going to try for a green (edge) to teal (center) burst.

Here's the body, and a color test. I'm currently prepping the body with some sealer coats before I hit it with primer.

It's a Danelectro Rumor. Plywood. I found the black one locally for $60 and it's become my main player (I've got Rics, Fenders, Custom Spec Warmoths, etc). I saw the Green on musicgoround for less than the cost of the EMG that was installed in it. That's the one I'm working on.

The neck is a medium scale SX neck that has the same narrow heel as the Dano (2.25")

Here she is all put back together. I'm not 100% sure that i will keep the carbon fiber looking pickguard. I may replace it with either a stained maple or indian laurel guard

If you decide to keep the carbon-fiber pg, it might look good with a carbon-fiber hs face. (within the blue perimeter) I think you can get that (thin) material at auto-stores.

That's a good idea too. I have the material. I used holstex for the PG and it took me about 3 hours. It is what I use to mold custom holsters. I think if I make the headstock piece, I could even mold it to cover the truss rod hole.

Cripes!! Where were you when I spent all of that time staining the headstock? lol

While the Duplicolor paint will likely say it's dry in 3 hours, it can only help to wait. I'd wait a minimum of 24 hours between color and clear. Don't sand in between color and clear. When spraying clear do three coats each day waiting for a half hour or so between coats. How many cans of clear do you have? Might need 2.

Cool body shape. Mosrite like. I like the reverse P one.

Thanks! I did all the mods to that one myself. Strangley, the green one has a significantly more bulbous upper horn, but I sanded it down a bit thinner.

I have 2 cans of normal clear, and 1 can of the effex clear. I was thinking I'd start with the full can of effex, and finish it iff with one of the regular cans.

I agree for the most part. When I spray clear, I spray as many coats as I can within the timeframe stated on the directions. It said to recoat within 1.5 hours or after 72 hours and I think I got 6 coats on. Two light coats with 10 minutes in between, two medium with 15 or so minutes in between, and two heavy coats with 20 minutes between coats. I had the luxury of being able to test the tackiness where the tuners were going to mount so it was more of a touch thing than an exact time. And for the body, I did use 2 complete cans of clear and didn't worry a bit when I wet sanded.

Yes. Doing bursts is tough work. I suggest experimenting with some cheap paint. Don't be afraid to mask off a portion. Also as related to what BigBoz said you can throw a few coats on and acrylic urethanes will build reasonable well, but they seal well too. This means trapped VOC's. It's always best not to rush. You don't need to spray dry coats or anything, but nothing ever failed by giving too much time between coats. Also tacky or lack of tack doesn't mean dry, it means set. Take it from someone who served on the ASTM committee for paint and printing inks.

Well, I put a few coats of surf green on now. I don't know if it's exactly the shade I had originally envisioned, but it's looking okay so far. I'm planning on swapping the old wbw pick guard for a cream one. I think it'll look nice with this green color.

This is with 6 coats so far:

Pretty good coverage - but there's a couple dots and a drip I'm gonna sand a bit then respray with probably 3 more very light coats before starting on clear.

Lesson learned... Take your time and don't try to speed things up
At least it's nothing permanent

That's a nice color. I know what you mean about it not coming out the color that you thought. I bought a can of Krylon "Seaglass Satin" and thought it would come out like surf or seafoam, but it ended up being more blue to my eye.

FWIW..the first pics look surf/seafoam/ copper patina to me.
