It should be OK to honor an influential member of a bass-less band here. I just read that Ray Manzarek of the Doors died this afternoon (OK, his left hand was the bass). So sad to have him go.

Editing my first reply as I thought it was a hoax. I was bummed to hear that it was true. Doors Soft Parade, just love that album. I personally can't think of some other band that people say "they sound just like the Doors." I'm sure someone will reply with an example, but honestly it's just not a copied sound and I always enjoyed them taking a left when others would take a right. Yes, imitation is flattery, but so is not being able to be imitated.

NYT, AP, Reuters, NPR and SF Gate are all reporting it. I'm not a huge Doors fan due to Morrison's style, but Manzarek always impressed me as a very creative guy. He also produced most of my favorite albums recorded by the band X.

Only one place was reporting his death when I posted my original hoax link. Washington Post and MSN picked it up so it must be real.

I was never a huge fan of the Doors but his keyboard work was pretty great. RIP

Thinking about playing the keys with my high school band on "Hello I Love You" and "Break On Through." Classic rock is required if you grow up in CT. Playing Doors tunes supported my then-closeted bassist.
