Ready for the Ice Storm ?

My brother wasn't impressed when I sent those pics to him?...

Quit being a pussy. The whole region got the same stuff you got. I did my entire driveway/sidewalks and the plant steps/sidewalks. I used a flat-blade shovel to break up the packed sleet and a plastic snow shovel for the rest.

We spoke before that - he said it took him 7 hours to clear PP lot with his skid-steer yesterday. I did run up & down the driveway 3X w/grader blade, so will go down the hill tomorrow and see if I can get back up?...

His driveway is a shallow grade 2 lanes of 40' concrete pad; mine is 275 yards of +200' single-lane gravel.

Here in western South Carolina the weather has been pretty mild for the last two weeks, but the current forecast for Friday is up to 8" of snow, which is a lot for here. We just had hurricane Helene, so all the weak trees are gone; shouldn't be too bad as long as we have all the supplies we need for a few days. Should probably go get a bottle of bourbon and settle in ;-)

Try chopping chunks if the ice up with your spade. That's what I did. Broke it up in pieces. Then I pushed it where I wanted it with an aluminum coal scoop followed by a push broom for the smallest pieces.

Kind of like this guy with his fancy shovel. Except with a one handle scoop.

Personally I'm in favor of either a big Ariens blower, or a F-250 with a blade. 15 years in New England.

We got snow and freezing rain in the greater St.Louis on Sunday. We got 4” of snow topped with 2” of ice covered with another 3 inches of snow with snow drifts. Now we are getting the deep freeze with rediculously cold temperatures at night…might get sub zero tomorrow night. We are also expecting a light dusting of snow tomorrow as well.

No electric for 36 hours is tough. Any word on when service is expected to be reconnected?

Man I feel for you. When we moved from Virginia to Illinois, we bought a lil’ buddie propane heater, and a multi-fuel generator for such events. Fortunately in the almost 4 years we’ve been here, the longest the power has been out at any one time is less than 4 hours.

Anyway, I hope it gets restored soon.

Thanks, that 36 hrs without power was in 2009 iirc. This time I didn't lose power but we had outages locally. Last I checked there were up to 90,000 or so without power in Kentucky. But not all at once. I think the majority of the outages were for a few hrs.

Our total mix was around 11" here in Louisville. Similar post storm temperatures as you guys. Low of 5 degrees tonight predicted. Snowing right now and predicted to be an inch or so. Friday we are supposed to get another 3"

Stay safe and hang in there.
