Really Bizarre Cover Songs

The musicianship and vocals on the Richard Cheese, Pat Boone, and Paul Anka covers are really good. Mainly, they are songs that some of their fans may not expect them to cover but they stayed in a musical lane that was comfortable for them as artists. The parody stuff is not really bizarre as some of the serious covers are.
But, as per the title of the thread, none of that is ‘bizarre’. However well executed, it’s all just novelty factor. The Residents are bizarre. Laibach are bizarre. Tom Waits, when he’s in the mood, can be bizarre. I’m sure if Captain Beefheart attempted any covers(aside from “Diddy Wah Diddy”)it would be bizarre. They tear apart the songs and reconstruct them toward the strange and off-kilter. Devo, too. Brian Eno did a cover of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”, I almost listed it, but while it’s kind of humorous, it’s pretty straight ahead, so I didn’t. Cat Power(Chan Marshall)did an album of unlikely covers, but the results were just kind of blah, not bizarre. I don’t know if she was using, or what was going on; here’s a Moby Grape tune...

It just sounds like an off night at a coffee house open mic. Here’s somthing similar, not that strange(at least to my ears)but a junked-out sounding lackadaisical mess...

Just taking a ‘prog’ song, and making it sound as un-prog as possible.

My point is that I agree that the Richard Cheese, Pat Boone, and Paul Anka covers are not really all that bizarre.

I was 14 when Robert Palmer released "Riptide" and didn't understand that many of the songs on it were covers. "Trick Bag" in particular is a very cool 80s techno-funk version of an Earl King song from 1962.

Devo, too.
Too bad Devo never met the high standard for bizarre covers that they set with "Satisfaction" again. They tried...they've done quite a few covers..."Secret Agent Man," "Working In A Coal Mine," "R U Experienced," "Don't Be Cruel," "Head Like A Hole..." all had their moments, but none of them quite hit the bizarre mark like "Satisfaction" with the exception of "Hey Hey My My," which wasn't exactly a cover, but the original version of the Neil Young song with Booji Boy singing and Neil guesting on lead.

Whoops...forgot to post it:

Yeah, I was thinking about that; as people got used to them and their MO, they became less weird, plus all the bands that came along in their wake inspired by them.
