Reasonable alternatives for a Rickenbacker

"My goal is to try and capture that late Beatles sound."

Since a lot of the later Beatles songs have Fender Jazz Basses(lefty and righty) on them, I'd suggest a MIM Fender Jazz(with flats obviously).

This has all been REAL helpful. I've been trying to get that sound but I just can't justify the price tag on a Rickenbacker. From all the posts I've read on here about them they just seemed so overpriced for what they actually deliver. In my case I would only be buying the shape and nameplate and that hardly seems worth $1400+

Looks like I'll try and track down a Peavey T-40. Ebay, here I come.

With the T-40 keep in mind there were 2 kinds of pickups (though very similar) that sound a little different.

The first few years had "toaster" pickups, which had black covers over the pole pieces, and the remainder of production years (early 80s on) had exposed blades where the older ones were covered up. The older "toaster" pickups were somewhat warmer and less punchy/aggressive, where the exposed blade pickups have more bite to them.

Mine was a toaster model and got more of that warm neck pickup thump that mccartney had, so you might want to try for one of those if you can, its not a HUGE difference but its a small step closer if you find one available to you.
