Reasons for cancelling Band Practice.

I left work once because one of my pets got sick and died. I was a wreck, and couldn't concentrate at all on my work. I had a very good boss at the time who understood and let me off. So missing band practice was no concern to me while I was dealing with it for a few days. My pets are very important to me. In fact more important, than a missed rehearsal that can be made up. If the person the OP is referring to is sincere, I wouldn't make an issue of it.

Apparently anything the singer/songwriter says:

-I didn't take my meds
-I took too many meds
-My car has a flat / is out of gas / was abducted by D.B. Cooper
-Was that today?
-My amp is in hock
-That reminds me, can I borrow $300 to get my amp out of hock?
-Do you have a guitar I can borrow?
-Do you have some pedals I can borrow?
-My sister needs the car
-My sister left the baby seat in the car, so I have to drive all the way back home, sorry.
-It's OK if I come 3 hours late to rehearsal, right?
-My stomach is acting up
-My tendinitis is acting up
-My ADHD is an all-consuming monolith that will eventually destroy everything in its path, including this band.

(which it eventually did. I am no longer in this project.)

Not exactly but very much like it.
That's how my main band of 12 years found its end a few weeks back. Tomorrow we make it official.

And I bet that, like these two, there are many more similar stories out there!

As for the dog or any other pet yes, who cares. What kind of band are we talking about. A touring, this is all we do and care about band? Or is it the we love to play music, chill with others and make a little cash on the side type of band?

I don't even care if someone phones the day of, which rarely happens in my current project, and say they can't make it due to a hangnail. If there is someone who cancels practice more often than not then yes, that would be an issue. Life is too short to be worried about rehearsal cancellations.

I've been in the same band with the same guys for 21 years. Three dudes with real jobs and family's. We've done a lot together. Lots of ups and downs. We still try to practice weekly. If someone can't make it no big deal. I don't even care about the reason. Those dudes are my best friends. It took a bit of time and understanding to get to that point though.

My wife's a retired cop. When she was a shift commander, she had a rookie call her during a (rare here in the southern US) snowstorm. The newb wanted to know if he could stay home because it was a "snow day."

To which the only acceptable reply is, of course

“it snow problem”

Any reason is good enough because it's nobody's business why you cancel.
However, cancel too many and you might be replaced.
Yes, but I think among people it IS the other band members business. You set aside one night a week to rehearse and someone keeps missing...something just happens to come up on THAT night that can't be postponed, but band practice can? Really?

An issue was not made of it. We all expressed sympathy. My purpose in this was to have a discussion about band practice and what events are worthy of a cancellation. We've missed a LOT of band practices lately for ALL kinds of reasons. The death of a dog was just the most recent reason.

I think I might even list them later.

That should be interesting for all of us.
