Reasons you need a P-bass:

So if we all have to get a p bass because it's the "best" and we all have to play the same type of music because it's the "best" and we all have to use the same amp because it's the "best" and we all have to play like some guy because he was or is the "best" then why don't we all just sit around and listen to that guy play the bass because there's only one way to do it and we're all striving to be that one way?

I'll be me, play my bass, the music I like, and the way I like to play it ... Thank you.

Not a diss on the p ... There are just other tones and other basses that people like too and they are by no means inferior to the p.

I love Spectors, but I always seem to have at least one P bass in the stable. I have two now actually. Just got done installing a John East P Retro in one. Wow! Now that's a P Bass!!!! LOL.

what's funny to me, and this is debatable.. everyone raves about Geddy's "Jazz tone" on Moving Pictures.. but to me, it sounds like a P bass... and his pickup settings/malfunctions sort of prove that.. I believe his "jazz tone" more sounds like a P Bass.. just not a "clanky" Steve Harris P bass.. but then again, in any players' hands, a bass sounds like him/her.. but I still believe Geddy's tone is more similar (back then) to a PBass than a Jazz... he often keeps the upper pickup higher in volume.. to me, the best sound is either a Pbass or a jazz bass with its bridge pickup backed off a bit.. at least for "rock.." Jaco proves otherwise and I respect him beyond all words.. there are no hard and fast rules... but I think the P bass is often overlooked.. I hear guys rave about Geddy's tone.. and often it was rick as on Red barchetta (from what I read).. yet Tom Sawyer and YYZ were on the Jazz.. but with the bridge backed off immensely.

Some people need them, some don't. Personally, I'm part of the the "I'll live without one just fine, thank you" camp...
To my ears, a $50 P bass sounds the same as a $5,000 one. And I'm not a fan of that sound either way.

And yeah, P-bass is definitely my choice. I even prefer my PB without the J.

If I need a P bass tone I will throw some flats on my Spector, cut all the treble and bring the bass up.
