congrats man.. I'm super happy for you, there can't be anything better than making in one day, what I'm likely going to earn in a lifetime as a highly paid professional!

That said, I have to ask.. in 1994.. $8M (after taxes?) was a lot of money... in theory if well invested, you should have 16-20M today... have you been good? or are you burning thru it?

To the OP-
Bad ass, thanks for sharing. I find these stories fascinating. Did you having the lotto $ meant you played in better quality bands, better gigs ?

(looks at car and gear pics in thread)

I'd say there's been a fair amount of burning thru it. :)

How cool! Congrats!

Are you looking to donate funds to a somewhat broken soldier who is 4 years from retirement...lol!

Honestly, how many distant relatives poked their heads out looking for handouts? Did you have to change your phone number? How many "non-profit" organizations came knocking at your door?

I'm wondering the same thing.

I have lived off the money making money ... but mostly it has been shrinking ... most lotto winners ( 98% ) are flat broke within 10 years ... my spending has slowed way down ... I'm almost normal .. !! ha ... we have traveled a good bit and had a good amount of fun ... but mostly living on a fairly fixed income ... trying to make sure I have money to live on until my folks pass , then i'll get a decent bump ... we built houses right next to my folks so we can take care of them as the age ... which we have ... !!

at first , only a few folks wanted to borrow a few bucks ... which they did .. and .. most paid 100% back .. ! most folks have said it did not change me a bit ... the lotto folks said I was the calmest winner they ever had ...

when I won I had a 4 acre mini farm/zoo ( the X wife's crap ) ... I just had my 150 lb Rottweiler sit out in the driveway ... it was funny to watch folks quickly turn around and drive away ... !!

I played in the same band for a little while ... and stole the lead singers girlfriend ... !! ( ha - now wife #3 ) we had a request for the Electric Slide ... I said if we ever played that stupid song again that we where thru ... well , we where thru ... !

thought about buying a bar and building my dream band of local friends ... BUT , a lawyer friend reminded me that it would be a rather dangerous liability ... having sudden wealth does make you a bit of a target ... !! so we moved to Florida , and kept a house back up in Ohio for a while ... mostly I've played, jammed at home ... go out and sit in here and there ... and I teach part time ...

i'll try to post pics of the most interesting cars .... this is a Panoz AIV Roadster ... custom made by Panoz racing ... fun, fast but useless !!

and don't forget ... 1/2 went to lotto /taxes ... then half to make the X go away ... Ohio being a 50/50 state ... so 16M turns to 4M pretty quick ... but the stock market of the last half of the 90's made that grow nicely ... !!

here's my first Carrera 4 ... 1994 factory widebody , 1 of only a few hundred ever imported ... a 94 Vette ( the wife's 40th birthday present ) ... and an old Fiat 2000 I was working on ....

Well played. I always figured relatives and old friends you haven't spoke to in 20+ years would come out of the woodwork.

I've never run around saying " hey I won the lotto " ... this is actually the first time I've really shared this info publicly ... most folks don't know ... lots of folks thought I was a drug dealer or mafia , being 40 and retired ... ! ha

I have no problems answering any types of questions ... it's been an interesting ride ... ! or see some more pics at my Facebook page ( you can see photos if you send a friend's request )

Speaks volumes about your level of responsibility that you're exotic cars are the latest and greatest models... Seems both the Vette and Porsche are from the 90's.. A lesser intelligent winner might have traded them in every couple of years.. It's not always easy to make money with money, sometimes it's best to let the market work for you, other times you take some risk and either lose big or win big... your age is a huge factor on how much risk you want to take!

I'm happy for you and hope you get to pass some of it on to your kids or some deserving relative.

I think with the lottery, you should just be happy with it. Obviously don't spend TONS but treat yourself. Investing some is a good idea but you don't want the markets or banks to crash and burn.

possible regrets of gear I passed on ... maybe 1 , ... it happened that a few days after I won , the PRS distributor stopped by the store ... he actually let me have a $25,000 PRS Dragon guitar to take home over the weekend ... !! I could have bought it at cost of $10-12K ... it was stunning ... but I sucked at guitar and passed on it ... I think I really should have bought it at that price .. !

cars .... I do regret never coughing up the bigger bucks for a 911 turbo ... but I probably would have killed myself in it ... !!

advice for GAS .... simply buy Used ... !! shop around .... I tried to apply this logic for those Holy Grail type items ....
Find an alternative that gives 80% of the performance for No more than 50% of the price ...

for the car fans ... here's a short list of cars from the first few years .... none last long enough to get their 1st oil change .. ! ha

7 - Porsches , ... 84 911 targa w/steel slant nose conversion , 93/95 968 Cabtiolets , 94 C4 , 97 C4s , 99 C4 , 00 Boxster S

2- Mazda RX7 twin turbos ,... 93/95

2 - Acura , ... 95 NSX, 96 NSX-T

4 - BMWs , ... 98/03 M-Roadsters , 98 M3 cabriolet , 04 330Ci cabriolet

3 - Corvettes - 94 , 98 , 03 50th Anniversary convertible ( which was the actual show car from the factory parade )

1 - Panoz Roadster

6 - Audis ... 99 A8 Quattro , 99 TTQR , 00 S4 , 11-Q5 , 12 A8L

5 - Volvos ... XC90 , C70 , S80 4.2 AWD, 2 XC60

2 - VWs ... R32 , GTI ( R32 was probably the best fun for the bucks so far .. ! )

several other hatchbacks ( I really like hatchbacks ) Mazda Speed3 , currently have a 12 second Ford Focus ST

many sport utes , trucks , a boat , more boring Cadis , Fords , Lincolns , Honda , etc, etc .... all always very well kept and traded in or sold for top dollar ...

what's next ... ??? just got a 2015.5 Volvo XC60 ( wife ) ... I'm not sure I wanna get into more low riding cars any more ... arthritis is catching up with me ... I really like the 2016 VW Golf R , but it sits pretty low .... might look into some type of smaller turbo AWD cross-over .. ?? I know that pretty boring ... ):
