might be having a fire sale in a couple months on all gear bass/gtr related .. ! bummer ... i blame Covid
I fell exiting drugstore a few days back , misjudged sidewalk to parking lot step .. ( had new stronger Readers on and mask , while folding up 3 ft long receipt ) landed on knees , then hands , tiny scrape on forehead ..
got up , gathered stuff ... noticed left hand, tip of ring finger, was pointing about 45 degrees down and inward ... couldn't move it on its own ... used other hand to straighten it ( with no pain )
my guess - torn extensor tendon = mallet finger .? i've kept it straightened since injury ,.. put home made splint on to keep it straight ... now have some other splints ..
got appt with nurse practitioner on Monday ... got Xrays of hand ... still know nothing for sure ... except splinting kinda makes your hand rather useless .. ha ... guess i'll go get copies of Xrays/report tomorrow and continue my own info quest ..!!?? have friends that are docs ,... maybe they can read Xrays well enough ...
if not for Covid ... i would have hand enough hand wash crap for a couple years ..!! and wouldn't not being keeping my readers on for some eye protection ... or missing some peripheral vision from a mask ...!!
guess i might have to get back to focusing on keys ... 9 OK fingers is enough ..! that ring finger on your fretting hand seems pretty pivotal for bass / gtr - leads/bending/vibrato or chords ... my guess at the injury is called - Mallet Finger ... if anyone has had that happen ..? seems to be a sports type injury - jamming finger , tearing tendons .. also same hand that has ruptured tendon in wrist ...
Man that's rough! I almost cut the same finger off on a fall down a flight 15 years back. Just cut down to the bone. It's never been the same since, the tip is still numb, but it regained strength quick. During recovery I became really proficient with my pinky finger. I can fret now, but still tend to favor my ring for most 2+ fret stretches.
I play a ton of chords/double stops and haven't had much issue, but it did take a while to get back to "normal."
Glad you're okay, hope it heels up quick!
You can kinda see where the stitches were.
If it's any consolation, I've broken half my fingers and dislocated all of them at least once so far in my short life. My thumb on my right hand has been the toughest. Skier's thumb injury twice, and two breaks (all from lacrosse). It fatigues faster than it did from using a plectrum and gripping most things, but I've built a lot of the strength and stamina back. The orthopedist recommended fusing it at one point because it was that bad (I was 21 at the time), but I've just taken to joint lubing foods and supplements when it gets bad.
Anyway, what I mean to tell you, is that it hasn't slowed me down much if any and I'm sure you'll be back at it before ya know it.
