So overall, you'd rate winning Lotto as a positive experience?

Yes ...

and I would say to Skip the Scratch offs , 2,3,4, number games ... the odds really suck even worse than the regular Super Lotto .... 6 out of 6 has odds of 1 in 29million ....

married the love of my life ... you really do find out which people are your true friends ... had experiences I would have never been able to other wise ... traveling from Aruba and every other island , to the Vatican , the Panama Canal ,.... I actually walked over ' the bridge of sighs ' ( a certain age group will know ) ... was in the original Casino Royale in Monaco ...

there are stresses ... being careful who you might tell ... watching your money ... any slip and fall moron that tries that crap on my property will get shot as a trespasser ...!! dead people can't sue ..!! ha

retiring at 36 is kind of a shock .... going from seeing your spouse a couple hours a day ( I worked days full time and played at night ) ... to the next girlfriend/spouse and being together 24/7 was a major adjustment ...! especially for me as an only child !

be available to move back to Ohio to help with both of my grandmothers who both had Alzheimer's was great ... hard to watch ... but priceless .... and the last decade we've been right next to my folks to help them as they head into their mid 80's ,... my dad's health has been poor for about 6 yrs ... I would say , if winning the lotto doesn't turn you into a self absorbed jackhole ... it's a good thing ..!

My Impression (having won 4 dollars this week in the mega millions) is that, if you have the self control to invest it sensibly and not overspend, you are generally better off taking the lump sum and investing it in something pretty safe. So basically, you get about half to have it all now, or you get all of it over 20 years. For a hypothetical, if you won 2 million and took a 1 million lump sum. If you invested it in something with a five percent return, you'd have 2.6 million after 20 years (and would have hit the 2 at year 15). That said, you;d need the self control to not just spend it all on dope or invest it in your brother's hair brained scheme's or whatever.

yep ...!! no hair brained schemes ... my wife is 1 of 12 ... most of her siblings are dolts .... that's kinda what I did ... a wad of play money ,... invest the rest and live off the interest or draw it down little by little .. !?!? depending on the economy ...

Great story. Nice to see a nice guy win.
Well, I think you're a nice guy, but maybe I should ask your ex wife, lol.
Mind you, she certainly got a nice payoff. Did she manage to make it last?

I'm not 100% sure ... we didn't talk to much ... even though I always paid my $1,000 a month Child Support for a decade .... she still kept him away from us ... and she took my Aussie , that we where breading on the mini farm , to a dog/cat shelter somewhere and I never found her or saw my dog again ..!! that was about as bad as the crap with my then 8 yr old son ..!!
so mostly I hoped she choked on it ...!! but , my family orient current wife be-friended her and the kid on Facebook a couple years ago ... so we chat once in a great while ... but I don't ask about her money ... it's just very clear they shouldn't ask me for another dime ... I know she has been married twice since we divorced .. ha ... it is true , money can't by love ..! or more class ..!

Damn...is she okay now?

she was in a very serious car wreck as a teenager back in 1971 ... broke just about everything on her right side ... femur was sticking out of her leg , broken ankle , pelvis several places , femur , wrist , arms , clavical , jaw , etc, etc ... lots of damage from that accident has come back to haunt her when she headed into her 50's ...! that was a nightmare of a surgery ... they went in from the front thru her throat and screwed things together , then flipped her over and sliced the back of her neck open and finished removing a couple discs and a plate and more screws ... took about 9 hrs ..!! during her teenage car wreck she did die , ... and was brought back ...!!! we where good friends before I won , I'm pretty sure she's my lucky charm ...!! she has had a couple more spine and various surgeries over the last decade ... she is actually doing pretty good now ...!! thanks for asking ..!!

I hate to think how fast I would go through that money, I know I own too many basses and live on a middle class salary. I know that everything depreciates so I always buy used but that kind of coin, I am sure I would be foolish and have an Alembic hanging on the wall again.
Glad to see your nice collection dave

Wow, I love Pedullas, and Porsche. That must really suck to hve all tha money.whats the pupose of this thread anyway m'lord?

I saw a post last week and someone asked ' what bass would you buy if you won the mega lotto ' or something like that ...
I posted a very short answer on that post .... but as I was approaching the date that I won on , ... I thought , *** , ... why not share my adventure with some other musicians ... I often hear people say they'd do this or that if they won the lotto , .. and I'd like to speak up , but it's just not real safe or smart to broadcast that kinda stuff around strangers ... as I've said , I do spend a good bit of time here on TB ... I like and respect this community and thought some folks might enjoy it ... nothing to gain for me ... my Xmas music CD is free to whoever wants some instrumental jazzy Xmas noodling ... I have nothing to sell ,... except what you might find in the classifieds ( wink-wink ) ... !!

No money in this world, object or material item would make up for not having my son around. I'm sorry to hear about that Dave... Having recently gone through a divorce I know how ugly things can get, but it's never over between a parent and child. I wish you all the best and recovery in that area.

some past basses ....

I love stories like this. Some people are already born a-holes, plenty of others would become a-holes if they suddenly became independently wealthy. But you sound like a good guy and I am glad life gave you a payoff. My parents are also in their 80s and my mother-in-law is in a nursing home. We moved back to be near them.

I wish the best for you and your folks.

my biggest reason for less Need for Speed ... the wife's neck

Oh lord. I hope she is okay! My wife was creamed and nearly killed by another driver at the end of 2013. Her neck injuries weren't that severe, but she's never been the same physically. It's so hard to watch her suffer and be of such little help.

Best good thoughts that your wife is well and recovered.

I know a fellow that won pretty big, and I'll never forget the time he said: "You have no idea what it's like to be awakened by the doorbell at 6:00am to find a sobbing girl you've never seen before standing on your front porch holding a baby that needs an $80k operation that she can't afford to pay for..."
I'd give her the money if she checked out legit. I would be such a sucker for stuff like that. But then where would it end if I did it for her? All you need is for her to tell the wrong person and next thing you know everyone with their sick babies is hitting you up. And you want to help them all but you can't. That's the big downside to being rich from Lotto, I'd say. Wanting to help but knowing the money won't be coming in forever so you have to turn some truly needy people down.

Good reality check.

I would probably donate a monthly\yearly sum to a charitable organization and somehow remove myself from the position of deciding who I can help. But I sincerly don't know how I would deal with an upfront (and legit) request like that, it would be very hard to just walk away.
