Recommend a 5 string bass to me

How am I being a troll? You gave zero info about what kind of basses you like.

To paraphrase the great Muhammad Ali:
"Answering uninformed questions and tolerating immature reactionary responses is the rent we pay for our otherwise good times here on Talkbass."

Obviously this is just an opinion so do with it what you want... Take that $400 hold on to it and save up a little more money. While you're saving your money go and check out every bass you can get your hands on and see what you like. DEFINITELY check out the classifieds here on talkbass. I could stay broke finding deals on this website for great basses. But, and again this is just my opinion, don't take that $400 and run out and buy a bass. Take your time and save up some more money in the meantime. Congrats on the acceptance into college!

I suppose that an apology for my crude behavior is in order a I've realized what an Ahole I was while reading the posts. Now, back to the topic at hand. I have tried to like "modern" style basses and guitars and I could never really get into them. Something about the feel of the body, neck and tone just throws me off. At this point, a used MIM would be the better choice

Thanks but like I said he would have to look in the used market, under the description tab it says:

Condition:
Used: An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully ... Read more

Usually a couple of emails should answer these questions, of course one has to go about used buying at a slight risk.

The cool thing about the MIM's is that you can upgrade the components (pickups, preamp, tuning machines, bridge) whenever you want and really customize your axe. You will usually still get out cheaper that an AMS.

I'll make a long story short. I was informed that the acceptance letter for the university that I applied for would be sent this week and upon hearing this, my parents said that they would get me a new bass as a college acceptance present if I get accepted. This would be a great opportunity to get my first ever 5 string bass since I've playing 4 strings exclusively for 8 years. Now, I can't get carried away with the budget of the bass (I believe it is a $400 budget, more or less). So, recommend me a 5 string bass at that price point. I've been playing 4 strings for so long that I don't know what to look for in a 5 string.
Was gonna suggest a LTD D-5. But it seems youre not into modern stuff. Its versatile as can be though, and has neck through construction

It can be done. I found one on the first try:

The recommendation for a new Sire is another good call (if you can save up another $100.00), those things get nothing but praise here.

If you buy used long distance, you really have to know what you're doing, which questions to ask, how to vet the instrument and seller so you don't inherit someone else's problems. For example, that Jazz at GC above, I'd call the store and ask a lot of questions first. Then I'd have to have a store nearby in case I needed to return it (otherwise you're paying the return shipping). The classifieds section here on Talk Bass is a rich resource, generally great sellers who want a smooth transaction.

I'd recommend a used sr505. should be able to find one in that price range. the necks of the sr series are kind of narrow so the 5 string will feel similar to most 4 strings. can't get that bang for your buck anywhere else that I've seen

I Sire would be nice. One of my parents told me that whatever money is saved on books and materials would toward the bass budget (Time to look for as many books in PDF format as I can). How long to Sire basses take to ship, usually. I'm not in a hurry, but I wouldn't want to be kept waiting almost a month for a bass to arrive.

have you ever tried a sire? I haven't tried one yet. Marcus Miller endorses them but I wonder how much of that is because he's payed to say that. besides, he plays fenders and I've always hated the way fenders feel, so my guess is if he truly likes the sire basses I probably would hate those too.

I have never tried a Sire (Tbh, they only interest me because they pack a lot of features into the bass and the price isn't bad). I find Fender basses to be the same Les Pauls. You have to try a few of them for you to find one that you truly like (That's what I did with my Les Paul and it is now my favorite guitar). Seeing as there is some more breathing room in terms of budget, I can check out some other brands (I love the BTB line from Ibanez and would be willing to spend hours looking through classifieds to see if I can find one used)

btb is cool because of the longer scale. does wonders for the tone, just depends if your hands are large or flexible enough to compensate

I got a chance to play on stage two weeks ago because my main bass broke down right before the set and I was blown away by it. I have big enough hand so the length of the neck and width of it were no problem. They only challenge would be getting used to that low B and how to integrate it into my style

The transition went pretty smoothly for me. the scale patterns are really the same, just moved over. you'll figure it out in no time
