Recommend a 5 string bass to me

Something told me that I would get one of these types of responses. Better to get it out of the way now rather than later. Now, why not recommend a legit brand or model instead of being a cynical troll?
I hope they teach you manner in college... He was trying to help not being a cynical troll...

I'd suggest opening up a bit on the whole no modern instruments thing. Reason being, 5-string basses tend to be geared toward modern-style players.

At any rate, a used Ibanez ATK 305 or something would keep you under $400, that particular line has a very classic look/shape about it, and they do a convincing Stingray tone among others.

Hope you don't think I'm trolling for suggesting a brand you said you were categorically uninterested in. Keep an open mind.

Before making a choice (new or used), I would recommend going to a few music stores and test drive some 5ers. There are so many variations (neck radius/shape, string spacing, pickup configs, etc) that, for me, I'd want to know what "fits" my hands and feel. Once you get an idea of what feels good in your hands, you can then narrow things down quite a bit. You may be a bit limited in San Juan, but probably worth the effort. Good luck and congrats.

This...is why I no longer give suggestions to "What kind of bass should I buy" threads.
You guys have already made up your minds.
And/or refuse to buy anything other than the same 'ol same 'ol you can get in a store.
No matter how much I approve of the suggested bass.

When THAT is the case. Why even ask for suggestions?

It's not being a cynical troll. It's rock solid advice if you're on a limited budget. $400 puts you squarely in the budget range for a fiver. It also puts you in range for something considerably more upscale and professional if you get something used.

I can pretty much afford anything I want. And I still shop used. I actually find it more fun. Why pay full price to get something really decent? Especially if you don't have to?

That's not trolling. It's good advice. At that price point used is the better option. I'd look toward an Ibanez or Yamaha. Also, and I'm not kidding, even though it's a running joke on TalkBass, Sire makes superb instruments at a low price. If you are looking to buy used, I have had great success both here and on Reverb.com with used purchases. Congratulations and good luck!

Is a BC Rich Mockingbird too "modern"?
They can be found used for $400-ish

I'll make a long story short. I was informed that the acceptance letter for the university that I applied for would be sent this week and upon hearing this, my parents said that they would get me a new bass as a college acceptance present if I get accepted...

PS depending on where you are going to university, you might also want to wait and buy in continental US if that's an option. Save on shipping, and probably more choices if you want to try hands-on before purchasing.

being dismissive and rude regarding good solid advice just shows your age ...

after 40+ yrs of bass playing ( a couple decades Full Time pro ) i will only buy Used ... why is that ..?

Depreciation .. !! if you buy a new $400 bass , it pretty much worth about half of that amount ...

if you buy a $400 used bass , it will still be worth 400 or more if bought right .. ! = Better Value

i think you're on the right track looking at MIM Fenders or Squires ... for me , the most important thing would be the 'feel ' of the neck ... !!! as everything else is fairly easy to modify ...

or maybe find a Franken Fender someone has built ... my last Fenderish build came in under $300 with nice mods already done .. !

as you'll learn ... YMMV .... just as mine has since starting music lessons in 1963 ...

There's nothing cynical or troll about this. Great deals can be found when buying used. You get more for your money. If you ask for advice, be prepared to take it. Your OP said nothing of it having to be a NEW bass.

$125 Used Ibanez
For Sale - Ibanez CT series 5 String Bass

$350 Used Fender Squier
For Sale - Fender Squier VM 70'S 5 String Jazz w/Mods!!

You're welcome.

How am I being a troll? You have zero info about what kind of basses you like.
