Recommend a Drum Machine

I regretfully sold my Alesis SR16 last year when I wasn't playing at all. Now I want another. I like that and might get another, but what else is out there that is cost competitive, available, and good. I am thinking used. I will just use it to input my own drum tracks into mostly for my rhythm pratice and to emulate simple patterns my son is getting in drum lessons. Thank you. Never sell anything damn it!

I saw this thread and was going to recommend the SR-16. A bit dated in terms of sounds, but it's so incredibly intuitive and easy to use.

Otherwise, I would go for one or more of the many fine iPhone rhythm apps. "Drum machines" as we know them are a dying breed these days, being replaced with software and more general-purpose MPC-style samplers.

Fruity Loops will. EZ Drummer will, to an extent... You need another program to sequence the beats (like Reaper or something).

EZ Drummer is way more real sounding than Fruity Loops, but the noises that come with Fruity Loops will get you where you want to be in the OP.

I really like Hydrogen. Easy to use, lots of readily available drum kits and sounds, and its available for Mac, PC or Linux.

So at this point does it make more sense for me to download software or get a dedicated drum machine? As I said, the SR 16 really did do everything I need.
