Recommend a gig bag or case?

I know this is an old thread, but I can't say enough good things about the Cronkhite gig bags. They are the nicest I've ever seen and IMHO, worth every penny.
I've got 2 old cordura Reunion Blues bags, circa '82, still in use. They're beat, but still useable. I bought a new leather RB bag a few years back without knowing about the buyout/offshore construction. It was still a nice enough bag, but not near as nice as the old ones.
I sold the new leather RB bag to a friend and plan on buying a couple more Cronkhites. Glenn's bags are as nice as it gets.

I picked one of these up, the G515: Link Removed

I really like it and hey, he's a fellow TB'er. :D Lots of storage, great protection and very rugged. I have not owned an InCase or Portabag. I would be interested to know how the IGig compares if anyone has had the chance to own both.

I have a Levy's for quick trips. I'm in the market for a sleek double bag for short trips.

Yes, unfortunately his site doesn't give that much to go on. That's one of the reasons I jump in these threads and try to spread the word a little.
I understand $360 for a gig bag might seem excessive to many (he also makes them in cordura for around $100 less), but if you're going to use it for 30+ years it becomes a bargain.
I have horn player friends who bought leather RB bags back around the same time (very early 80s) and every one of them is still using them today.

it has a good amount of padding. its not the same stuff that you find in most other gig bags. the soft foam is thin, maybe 1/8" inch, you ahve soft fabric on top of that for touching your bass, then the harder panels underneath the foam, then some more layers as you go outward until you get to the nylon exterior. the entire wall is probably an inch thick at least, might be thicker. i dont have my gig bag on me right now, its in storage for teh week. on the bottom there is a big piece of dense foam that protects the entire bottom of the bass for the times you set the bag down on the bottom, which i do without worries. i never feel like my bass is bouncing around the bag, and the strap padding is nice and thick and wide, so its nice to carry around.

there is also a big chunk of solid foam that you can move around (velcro back) that supports your neck.

the stage 5 is apparently going under a redesign thats set to debut in a month or so. i saw the prototype images from access, and they look great. the design is more in the teardrop shape of the sadowsky and incase bags instead of teh traditional guitar shape. so i personally think it'll be an improvement.




on a side note. anyone know what that gig bag is in the Genz Benz corner ad in the first issue of Bass Gear Magazine????

Too bad it's losing that classic guitar shape, though, arg. The teardrop shape always reminds me of a tennis racket bag.....

i give a fail to the pro-tec double bag i tried and am sending back.

- it was generically over-sized and unneccesarily bulky.
- my fender jazz and p-bass moved around inside a good bit.
- the balance was off and in combination with my basses easily shifting around, i think i would of fallen over trying to walk with it.
- there was pretty much no padding on the sides or bottom

Damn, sorry to hear that. :( And those aren't cheap, either...

This is why I'm worried about getting gig bags where's there's only padding in an outline around the guitar, as opposed to two pieces of thick padding that sandwich it from the front and back.

I see that Roadrunner has a new double gig bag for $69 at MF (no pic, of course); I've always found their stuff to be very high quality. Anyone ever tried or seen one of these? I have the Fender double now, and it's a little thin on the padding but otherwise OK for general use.

As far as the double bags go, I really believe that you get what you pay for. I've never liked the single bass bags by Fender or Roadrunner so I'd imagine that their double bag wouldn't be up to my expectations.

I had an Undercover double which was ok padding-wise. But zipping around the upper bass bout would be tight. And it always changed my tuning. The old LowEnd leather bag is an incredible bag with rediculously thick padding and lots of room. But I worry about the leather when the weather gets real rainy. I recently bought an Incase Dub bag. Now that bag is sweet! It us SUPER protective and is really easy to carry. Lots of room. I really, really like it and very happy with it. It was fairly expensive but I love my basses so it was reletively small investment in protecting my basses which is the bottom line.
