I could listen to "Blue Trane" for a long, long time.

I once listened to the album "Blue Trane" on repeat for an entire 12 hour road trip driving alone from Nova Scotia to Boston. This was by choice. It's an amazing record.

For something modern how about anything by Medeski Martin and Wood? Three awesome musicians. Inspiring stuff!

I'm all over MMW man. Chris Wood has been my idol for years.

Steve Lacy's "Reflections", "Evidence", "The Straight Horn of Steve Lacy" are great (and "Clinkers", a live solo album, is highly recommended too.. I believe there are a few videos of him in solo performance as well).
If you can get ahold of Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd's "Schooldays" album, do it up.
Old And New Dreams is a great band to check out as well.

Lacy is incredible. Anyone interested in music at any level should study his body of work.

Chu Berry w/ Hot Lips Page stuff is pretty off the charts (and just Chu Berry or Hot Lips Page in general.. but do check out their version of "Body and Soul" to get started).

And then there's the great Don Byas (I think someone posted his "I Got Rhythm" duet with Slam Stewart here on TB).
