Recommendations for a 'weird sounds only' board

Why not try effects that don't come from pedals? Place different mechanical objects near the pickups ( toys, power tools, etc) and listen to what unique sounds they make?
You can also “prepare” your bass, doing things like putting mutes at different places under the strings, alligator clips, clothespins, playing with a slide in your plucking hand like a bow, or detuning strings.

If you did want to try a multi-effects pedal, the Poly Effects Beebo is a eurorack setup in a pedal format so it gets weird quick.

I was reading this and thinking about how the Line6 HX Effects or Stomp can get so weird once you let it. Sure it is straightforward and vanilla as advertised, but the expression pedal mapping to multiple parameters and the most recent Glitch and Poly effects make it worth considering. It plays so well with other pedals making room for weirder devices so you don't need an individual device for an effect you don't use that often, not to mention all of its utility functions like EQ, compression, and tuner.

My favorite weird expression pedal combo:

Heel: Pitch unison; Vibrato depth and mix set to min, any reverb or delay mix off.

Toe: Pitch up +2 octaves; Vibrato depth and mix control set to max, 16th note; Any reverb or delay mix to taste ( usually ~30% for me).

What that gives you is your basic tone in heel position, but when you ramp up to toe position it gets high wide and wiggly! I figured it out trying to cop the synth sounds from a dubstep Flux Pavilion track with a L6 M9 years ago. I still come back to this because it is just so fun. Add effects to the heel and fade them in and out to make it even cooler. Endless options.

I’ve spent a bit of time looking into the HX Stomp, if I can combine it with a small number of unique pedals it does seem like a very good solution. The ability to save presets would make things a lot easier. Am I right in thinking you can use the send / return to place an external effect anywhere into the chain? For example, I use a drive, a pitch shift and an eq in the HX, then send the signal to a delay pedal, then back to an amp/cab in the HX?

In the synth pedal realm, you can get a boatload of weird sounds out of the Panda MIDI Future Impact pedal. It's my favorite and most used pedal at the moment. I use it mostly for more conventional synth bass sounds, but it's definitely capable of some weirdness. Plus, it's deeply programmable via the Editor software, and you can store up to 99 saved patches and recall them with a device like the Tech 21 MIDI Mouse (which is what I use). It tracks great, but I've found it works best when it's first in line in a chain of pedals.

Most of these are variations on the theme of ring mod/bit crusher. The *** is a psycho distortion/filter beast, the Fuzz Barn is a kinder, gentler version, the Chaos even milder.

Any five of these pedals on a board would have guaranteed room-clearing capability and could most certainly get you fired from any band that isn't strictly a noise outfit. I say "Well done!"

One of these days I’m gonna hook them all up together and see if I can create a thermo-nuclear meltdown. If I still have any speakers left, that is.

Experiment with a flanger! If you have it within arms reach as you are playing, manipulating the speed and depth controls can get a very warped sound. On my TC vortex, I set the feedback at 3:00, depth at maximum, and a slow speed for a nauseated de-tuned sound. After playing a note, adjust the speed up and down for some added weirdness.

If you really want a weird pedal board you cannot go without the Electro Harmonix Flanger Hoax. That is one of the weirdest, most unpredictable pedals ever made. I had one for a time and while you could never seem to get the same sound twice, you could stumble upon the craziest things while recording. Check out this clip where I play bass into it and it sounds like a child coughing

I used to own one of these. Unruly and unique. I was fond of it.

Does the Digitech FreqOut pedal work with a bass?

And if so, how long can we maintain the feedback (momentary mode), please?

I would like to create a drone, keep a sub note on several bars with just one pedal.

Thanks.

May the Groove be with you.
