Recone Speakers or have I lost my mind.

Jimmy, he's saying that these switching amps' power supplies operate at ultra high frequencies- not even close to 60Hz. So since the supply is charged several thousand times a second, each charge can be small, which does away with the need for a large transformer. That's the gyst of it IIRC.

BTW have not hooked the SM12 up yet. I had stayed up for 2 1/2 days without sleep at work. Gonna try to hook this thing up this morning as soon as my Sweet Wife and Daughter wake up. I have been up since five.

On the subject of this type of technology I saw this stuff come into industry a number of years ago. The MI has followed behind slowly.

I have a number of welding machines that came out with a 3 phase switch that took the crest of each AC phase and applies that to the DC output at high speed. It works quite well and is extremely light. I was one of the first companies to try this out. Unfortunately they had not worked all the bugs out when I first got this stuff and went through a lot of heart ache til they got it squared away.

Essentially the EMF of the winding if proportional to the ferquency x number of turns x area of the core x flux density.

For the voltage relationship to remain constant, if you were to double the frequency, you would half the core area. It's not entirely linear because other factors (losses) come into play at really high frequencies, but it's close enough.

Note that aircraft have long used 400Hz to reduce the size of electrical components like motors, actuators and transformers on planes. Weight saved = higher payload.

BTW ex-airline pilot. We also used three phase power. Would get us three circuits of 120V instead of one or two....

Just like SPOCK saying cross circuiting to "B" he was refering to changing the power source from "A" Buss to "B" I always loved that line...

Just got done playing the SM 12 and comparing it to the LMIII as well as the PLX2 1804 in power.

Very interesting.

At this point I can safely say this.

The SM 12 into two 8 ohm Cabs will eat the LMIII into two 8 ohm cabs for breakfast.

I'll probably start a thread on this subject alone.

Was not planning on it but I went ahead and hooked up the QSC as a power section for the two amps and I can also safely say now that the stoutness I refer to is the amount of Power the QSC has on tap.

Unfortunately the QSC is twice the weight of either amp and still needs a preamp to run it. By the time you stick it in a rack with a Preamp things start getting heavy. Not as heavy as something like an SVT but heavy none the less.

Have not played the SWR/QSC head for a while since getting the MB. After hefting it atop my cabs I quickly remembered why I went down this light weight amp route. :D

There are pluses to each amp so y'all MB lovers don't get all squirrely on me. :D

Vewwwy intewesting, can't say I'm surprised with your preliminary findings. Look forward to a gig report. Curious to hear what you think about the dual pre's in the GB unit.
Design for MB? I was thinking Bertone, but that's just me.

Funny you should ask. Havent had time to really compare each channel seperatly as much as I'd like but it seems the Tube Channel in the GB is much hotter than the FET unless I was missing something.

The question remains: What do the GB and MB sound like with the MM preamp direct in to their power amps conpared with the QSC?

Did not try the SWR into either but did try the QSC out of the MB and it was Stout.

I'd love to get the engineers' takes on this. 375w/ch vs. 600w/ch into 8ohms. I'm no engineer but it seems to me that when the GB is pushing it, the QSC is still waking up. Makes sense to me, from a probably incorrect intuitive point of view. There's a lot more power amp 'stuff' in the QSC compared to either mini amp.

I agree. The QSC has a boatload of power on tap. Especially that model. The 1804 (though it won't bridge) has more power on tap than a Crest CA-9 in stereo mode. The Little Buggers do not stand a chance against it.

That being said the QSC cant offer a 6 pound rig. The MB in it's little/tiny/neat package, I can see just how popular the thing is. By the time you couple the QSC with a Preamp, then mount it in a rack, yes it is very powerful and yes it starts getting heavy.

The SWR/QSC rig became like picking up a Lead Brick. All that weight in such a tiny package. It is definitely lighter than an SVT or using a Pre with say a CA-9 but still heavy.

The GB and MB Heads are just insanely light.

The QSC hooked to my cabs was able to push 1200 watts. 600 watts a side which sounds like a lot but really is not. I have found for me with these drivers they prefer a little extra over a little under rated power.

The GB can only push 750 watts into my cabs at 375 per side. However it is pretty darn stout and using just one side of it at 4 ohms/600 watts is pretty rigid as well. I can easily tell that at two 4 ohm loads the GB would be close to the QSC at it's lower power rating. The MB would not come close.
 
Yep, I feel ya. I have lately been using a MB TA501 into a Golight 4x10, 4ohm. Very nice, very loud. But I also have this 'brick', no comparison, and none expected. I just don't feel I need it most of the time:

I'd like to hear one of those 501's. Me think with the addition of the Tube Compressor those heads would squeeze more clean signal out of the Analog 500 watt MB Amp.
 
I can't compare it to LM, or any other micro head as I haven't tried any others. The compressor is very smooth- none of that 'swimming with ankle weights' feeling I get with some compressors.
Pretty darned loud with this cab. It'll knock you over with Goliath and Goliath Jr stack, for 6 10's @ 5.3ohms(I run Jr @ 16ohms). But that sort of defeats the purpose, so I'll usually run the 'brick' with those cabs.

Very nice I bet the TA501 sounds good through the Golight 4x10

It is good to see someone else using the Golights. I like these cabs. As light as anything out there and perhaps as good sounding as any.
