I've read the entire thread, but maybe I'm still not clear on what you are looking for. I think you are looking to do this in order to wring the last bit of power from your small amp, in a variety of configurations. And we've said don't bother- the gain will be very small.
Regarding 'stoutness' or 'rigidity'- OK. There is definitely something about big iron that the little amps cannot duplicate, numbers be damned. Are you thinking that dropping the impedance will enhance this 'stoutness' when using a small amp? Maybe, I don't know, but I doubt it. Guess you should wait and see- maybe the GB amp will do the trick for you with the cabs as they are.
 
I'm starting to figure out what RED's looking for... In my opinion it's nothing that can't be cured with:

A Lotto Strike, 4 SVT's in Parallel, a Road Crew, Big Recording Contract and a Super Model Girlfriend.

I agree with you. The gain may be minimal and not worth it. Not trying to squeeze the last bit of power from the amps though or at least that is not how I'm looking at it.

Yes I'm thinking the stoutness would increase to use a really vague term that could mean just about anything like "airy top end".


A good way for me to describe what I am talking about that I am indeed hearing is like tightening a string up tighter. The tighter it is wound the more rigid it becomes. And to circumvent those who will say at some point it will break, I don't think I'm asking the impossible but who really knows until it is tried.
 
OK I think I get it now. You are comparing the more powerful QSC to the MB head. And you are thinking that the higher power of the QSC is responsible for this 'stoutness' that it displays. I doubt it, it's the entire amp really. The QSC has some big hunks of stuff inside, compared to any mini amp. I suspect you will find that it sounds considerably more stout than even the quite powerful GB head you are getting, but I hope I'm wrong.

Yes I am thinking of stouting it up with the GB though the PLX2 has considerable more arse than the GB. The MB will never catch up to the QSC unless it starts growing.:D


I can use the MB for many things though. Just got done working on some material for a couple hours with the MB. Nice Tones.

If you look back at the begining of this thread I mentioned how folks were stating the GB would not be any louder than the MB into two 8 ohm cabs. Thats what got me to thinking about this to start with.

I like the cabs I have. Will just have to see what the how the GB compares with the MB and two 8's. It is showing to deliver tomorrow.

Lightweight amps can have just as much (or more) stoutness as the heavyweight amps. In pro audio, the big guys have gone almost entirely lightweight for their pro touring products... Crown with their I-Tech, QSC with the PL-380, Lab Gruupen, PowerSoft etc. These are the biggest of the biggest products being used for subwoofer arrays.

Voicing of the entire signal path is most likely responsible for the differences you are hearing.

At equal power, I wouldn't think so unless the LMIII amp has some problem with the power amp design (which I doubt). As you increase the power beyond whatthe LMIII is capable of, the bigger amp will stay cleaner while the amp of the LMIII just runs out of steam. That would be true regardless of the weight of the amp though.
 
BTW, Andy addressed something that I don't get...what is this about the "stoutness" of tone in micro-amps that people are complaining about? I don't get it. To me they sound as stout, and in most cases, even more stout than their larger SS/hybrid counterparts. Just like any other amp, they sound great till they run out of clean juice, and sound bad once they do unless there's a preamp tube. Compare them to an SVT and I might agree they're not as "stout." I hear nothing non-stout about any of them, though. Call me crazy...
 
One explaination is that the lightweight amps are often played through smaller cabinets, and fewer drivers, so there's not the benefits of coupling, lower box tuning and increased baffle area. All 3 variables are important to low frequency extension.

I could understand an output transformer, but after my experiences with micro heads, I'm starting to think that power is power as long as it makes the amp work right. Maybe I should start a thread about it instead of hijacking Red's. But I really think they're hearing things that aren't there.

Nope, since the frequency is higher, the transformer core becomes smaller for identical characteristics.
