My drummer recorded the band today ( just quick version of a song so everyone can practice to it and hear how it will sound down the road sometime i think ). We had a real hard time dealing with the bass. I have an Ibanez SR 300 DX ( active ) GK 700 RB-II and a gk sbx 115, he had a presonus firpod ( with like 8 inputs ) going into the soundcard and then to his Cool Edit Pro program. We tried miking, plugging straight into the firepod with my bass, then going through my amps Direct Out. We had to set almost all of the levels to a minimum and turn the Bass EQ almost all the way down to get it to not sound burpy. We ended up going DI on my head into the firepod.

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice to get a better sound out of this equipment for recording. Im just looking for a deeper sound without the burpy sound.

Is there a gain control on the Firepod? Somewhere you should be able to cut the signal level so you aren't clipping the input on the Firepod. (I know, this probably isn't helping you at all.)

I checked out [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] and it shows gain controls for each input. Also, is it possible the main knob was cranked up due to lower output from other devices connected to the Firepod?

Any of the options you tried should work just fine. +1 to the advice about adjusting input levels on the firepod. Also, make sure your DI signal isn't going to a mic / instrument input on the firepod.

I record into a firebox all the time, usually out of my 800rb effects send, which I find gives a 'drier' signal than the DI out. I've never had any trouble with 'burpy' or distorted sound

ill try that out. I was using a mic cable from my di out into a mic/instrument in

also, would using a mic's xlr cable be one of the problems we ran into? and where do i plug into if i am using the effects send?

I'll try a different approach and just tell you what I use to record direct. bass -> aphex punch factory (a compressor/di) with both dials around 7 or 8 -> mxr bass di+ (eq with very nice tone coloration) -> board. I use a very similar recording setup too. Although it isn't exactly commercial, I'm pleased with my simple di sound. I'm not about to plug my band, but pm me if you want a link to some of my recordings. Good luck.
