Recording V-4B using attenuator, load etc.

Get a Radial JDX 48 and an Electro-Voice RE20.
Put each on a separate channel. blend as needed.

The simplicity factor and size factor, plus some sound techs like a DI that's not affected by my amp settings. That and I got the REDDI a year and a half before the V4B came out and about 3 years before the PF-50T came out

Sure do! Usually I use it when I don't bring the PF-50T, especially if I'm using one of my solid state amps.

do you ever use a DI out of one of the speaker outs on the V-4B or similar instead? would do the same job?
Not new out of the box, but accidents do happen so it's not completely unheard of.
Yes I do, and yes it does. You have to have a cab or dummy speaker load hooked up to the amp still, but you can easily hook up a DI made to work at speaker level and get the same results as the PF-50T's transformer out. Not recommended for SS or hybrid amps, but with a tube amp, it's awesome.
As a former recording engineer in big 24 and 48 track studios (now laptop stuff) on of the greatest bass tones I ever had (assuming warm & thick) was a V4B with a 300 Watt dummy load.
Pretty sure I got this from Newark electronics and ordered the 300 watt as I thought I would also want to do this with an SVT.

If I used a DI it would have been a Countryman back in those days.

Not so sure we had affordable reactive loads back then and I really didn't think it would record this well, but it did!

nice - you came out the preamp rather than the speaker out with the DI? did you try both and prefer the pre?
With many DI's, the speaker out (or direct into the console) would damage the amplifier
A tube amp with no load on the output will cause damage where a SS amp will be OK
rivera mini rockrec - handles up to 300 watt as a dummy load (in 4 or 16 ohm settings, only 150 watts in 8 ohms), DI output, clean or speaker emulated options, and a headphone out. Could be used for silent practice, recording, or pass through to a cab. Not an attenuator though.
That Rivera device seems like quite the ticket for this. The reviews are stellar. Do note that it is not an attenuator, though. It's either all internal load or all speaker as the load.
