Double Bass Red Eye Preamp

Here’s a question for everyone, have you tried running the Red Eye into the effects loop? Buffer preamps generally have to go between the pickup
and the preamps input, to achieve the desired impedance load. I’ve believe I read that some of you are putting it between the preamp and the amp input.
Does it have the same sound when you connect the Red Eye at that point in the signal chain? Just curious.

@Ric Vice I have not tried it in the FX loop. I have tried it just about every other way: before the Noble ad into the FX return, after the Noble and into the FX return, by itself into the front end, by itself into the FX return.

It just sounds best after the Noble and going into the front end of the amp. This gives the added bonus of being able to roll off some lows as the volume goes up.

The trial Red Eye just got to me. I will give it a try directly into a power amp next week and make some audio a/bing it with my Felix. I recently switched instruments. I'd hope to a/b it with the Sarno Blackbox but ended up selling since it did not play nicely with my trs Yamahiko pick-up. The Yamahiko into the Felix with a power amp is working really well for me. Load in/out is a breeze.

Love this thread, and its ability to help me spend money on the quest for tone.

I wound up getting the Twin and having a split cable made by Bayou to take the Effects output into two separate signal chains feeding a two channel amp. I somehow missed the “A+B” toggle on the box, and using that means i can continue just using the mute switches on the amp like I normally do.

Works really nicely as many others have said regarding clarity, evenness, and more, for both the P bass and the upright. Sounds great in the practice room, looking forward to hearing it in rehearsal and gig this week.

Played my first concert using the FireEye with FOH last night. The DI was fantastic, and both the sound guy and a number of musicians in the audience came up to tell me that it was the best live DB sound they had heard in that hall by a mile. So I guess the FireEye has even more magic in it than I thought.

Using it as the sole device - or with other preamps / eq’s etc?

I've got it on a little Pedaltrain Nano board. The signal chain is FullCircle-->Noble Pre (flat)-->FireEye-->Phil Jones Super Flightcase. I'm running it into the front end of the PJB so I can use the low bass band of the EQ to filter out some mud when needed.

I have no idea why this order works or what the FireEye is even doing, but it sounds glorious and I didn't mind putting together a little mini pedal board for the first time in my life to accommodate it.

OMG love this thing. It had its first rehearsal last week and gig last night, and I’m convinced. Signal chain for upright: red-eye twin > f-deck hpf3 > pjb suitcase compact + cab (which sits on one of those Aurelex gramma foam pad things)

Gig report: I originally sought this out because I had come to hate my upright sound at the regular restaurant jazz quartet gig (medium size space, low ceilings - literally revolutionary era). Too loud, too soft, they put me thru PA, distortion, nothing worked, yuck.

So last night I couldn’t wait to use it, and while it sounded better, it was too boomy - drummer and bar owner kept complaining about that. I dialed up the hpf to kill more low end, which helped, but didn’t really fix the boom. Eventually i remembered the hpf as a phase switch on it - flicked that thing and holy crap it was instantly perfect. It was the first time the switch had a noticeable impact. No need for PA, everything blended w/ the band perfectly, owner returned to say he loved the sound.

Also I think Chris said something a while back about the pedal making playing more effortless/easy, less need to dig in (sorry I forget how you characterized it exactly), but yeah - from a physical standpoint everything about playing last night and in prior rehearsal is just effortless - the only digging in I did was intentional and where I felt the music wanted to go, and it was still somehow not an effort.

What a joy, so glad to find this thread, much appreciation to everyone for their reviews and explanations, hope this one helps someone else too.

Still need to find the right P-bass tone w/ the other channel tho, but i think that’s a string choice issue…. Yay? ugh? :)

I gave the trial Red Eye a-go yesterday. It did not seem to improve my signal chain. I made some quick recordings but would rather not post them because they don't seem to flatter the Red Eye. I was curious about the per note impedance but it doesn't sound as good as a 10 or 20 m buffer with the Yamahiko for me. Monday I will give it a go directly into my power amp to see how it does driving a power amp directly.

Anyone next? Should it go back to the manufacturer?

I've plugged the red eye directly into powered PA speakers with good results. I get the volume in the ballpark with the knob on the back of the speaker and then use boost to fine-tune. I don't know if I trust that to have enough control on a gig but for sessions it's worked well.

I’m not sure how this thread skipped past me… but I just read all 24 pages.
I’m intrigued and looking for an ultralight rig to pair with the MAS 16.

I’d like to get on the demo list if possible.

thanks!

Still digesting the marathon thread consumption I did yesterday and I’ve watched a few videos on the YouTube.

I don’t remember seeing this so I’ll ask here. Has anyone mentioned a phase switch on the twin? I’ve got a dual Yamahiko and that might be a nice option.
Right now I’m torn because the new ToneDexter is coming out soon and it’ll have a dual input option with a phase switch. If the Red Eye can do that then I can keep my old ToneDexter and save some money by picking up one of these instead. I’m r if it sounds as good as the videos I’ve heard with acoustic guitars I might sell the ToneDexter outright and make my tiny board again.

Is the TRS Yamahiko? I found the impedance in general to be to low on the fire-eye to be useable with the Yamahiko. The gain pots don't work like a mix knob. It's the most expensive option but the Grace Designs Felix is amazing with the trs Yamahiko. I use the phase switch on the Felix. Without it, it sounds choked. I don't remember there being a phase switch on the Fire-Eye.
