Double Bass Red Eye Preamp

I sent the twin on to its next trial bassist. I love that sound of the two and maybe I'll buy one but right now I have a micro pedal with a tuner looper HPF and redeye and it is all nicely hooked together and daisychained and I just plug and play and it sounds so good and is so nice I dont want to mess with it. But the 2 Yama's into the twin sound great.

You really don't miss having any EQ in your signal path (besides HPF)? I'm skeptical on that point, but very intrigued by this thread. I'll have to pick up a Red Eye soon.

Sorry you misunderstood- I have that pedal board and that goes into a tube preamp velcrod to a power MAS18 speaker. There is eq on the tube pre and the Redeye renders it very effective so flat or very near flat is pretty much where it lives. Although it does not need it adding the HPF(Fdeck) to the mix really opens up the sound of the speaker.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying.

So most everyone is using the Fire-Eye preamps with only pickups? No mics blended in? That sure sounds convenient, but....

I like the Lifeline a lot, but it sure could use some more upper frequencies IME and IMO. Does the Red-Eye do anything to help with that? More definition, presence, or whatever you want to call it? Maybe I should sell everything and go Yamahiko into a Fire-Eye.... but I just got my Headway and I really like :(

First world problems, as my co-worker used to say.
Hey Eli,

I haven’t tried blending a mic into the mix using the Red Eye. If/when I do (I have one of those AMT rigs) I’ll probably use my 2-channel Headway preamp.

From my experience, the RE does a nice job of tightening up the overall sound and providing a bit of clarity and warmth. There is a treble knob on the model I have which I futz with depending upon the acoustics in the room, the band, the music, etc.

For my needs the RE excels in giving me a quick, easy and effective way to plug in and get a good sound with just the pickup.

Good luck out there and hope you’re all staying busy!

So far in my experience the RedEye is the best PIEZO Imp matching box out there. It goes IN FRONT of any eq preamp like a Headway or AI front end or tube pre or combo amp. The RE is not for blending mics or eq or any of the other things that come later....It just does that FIRST part better - the Impedance matching. It takes the signal from a piezo and sets it up to sound great going into what ever you are plugging it into next. The RE sounds so good that what comes after does not need the same kind of tweaking or blending because just the sound of the piezo now sounds good enough that you don't need to mess with it.(for me, on my bass thru my gear etc) With that said if you want to blend in a mic, you will need some OTHER box to do it- something like a Headway or Felix or AI 2 Ch front end with an XLR second ch.

Daren just sent me some graphs of the treble knob as is and an upright proposal graph...
anybody want to weigh in on what they think of this idea?

I added a jpeg of your file so its easy to compare. I like it. There's a lot more going on in the mids where the twang lies. This is what I usually eq out although much less lately since adding the red eye.

I haven't really used the treble knob on my redeye much. The couple times I have I've boosted to ad definiton. I do like how it does that without drastically changing the sound. It gives me something that the eq on my amp doesn't.

Daren is going to put the mod in an used red eye...since the deice is as small as it could be and the knob is already on there...Today I played a gig with the redeye going into my powered MAS16 which does not have gain. Engaging the Boost switch and then using it's dial got me the extra volume I needed.

I don’t think I’d have any use for those proposed EQ curves— too broad, especially in that 200 to 400hz area, and for an amped signal, I don’t really have any use for anything above 5khz.

Now, if he could flip those treble curves and give me a low shelf in place, that could make things more of a one stop shop for me.

So ....the treble knob is ON THERE. Daren is just trying to offer a tweak that would be more upright friendly, since there seems to be a lot of interest. Not that it is going to replace your EQ. I find the treble knob useful for dialing in detail, but non essential (I often forget it) The boost is totally useful, and having a small pedal board with a tuner and HPF and the Redeye all bundled and powered (with a daisy chain 9v) rocks.

I would like the treble knob to by tied to the boost switch for switching between arco and pizz. Less treble when using the bow can be a good thing. Idk how it currently works, but it looks like the treble setting is constant regardless of whether boost is engaged or not.
