red flag prior to auditon...

I can't really see the red flag - it's a function band and the name is largely irrelevant. Auditioning multiple players is very sensible and they are unlikely to jeopardize their gig by choosing bad players, so your concern about the bass player isn't necessarily valid. Sounds like you've over-thunk your way out of a decent little gig...

i get it, it would bother me too. I guess the feeling is, if they are willing or unaware of a small detail like that, what other things are they not aware of in their profession? Do they just wing it? Or do they do things with purpose? It's small things like that, that can lead to bigger things. If you are in it only for the money, it may get old. If you are always gonna have that anxiety moment when someone asks whats the band name, or see merch or signs, it isn't gonna be a good thing. It eats at you.
That's my opinion.

This weekend I heard about a casino band that was looking for a guitar player. Scuttlebutt was they play one, occasionally two weekends a month and got payed casino rates + casino bene's (room, food, drinks.) So I shot off an email, got the setlist (same ol' same ol' casino dance band stuff) and a link to the band website. There are a couple video clips so I take a listen. The bass player is a funky beast! And the rhythm section has a pocket deep enough to smuggle small children! Score! I have a fairly direct, to the point no messing around phone convo with the band leader and everything seems to be "show up, play the gig, get payed, go home in the AM.

Easy Peasy, right?

I take another look at the website and the name of the band doesn't make any sense to me, so I figure it's just a goof I'm not getting. No worries, as long as the Benjamin's are green, right?

Then I realize it's not a joke. The name of the band plastered all over the top of the webpage is "Copestetic".

wait a second. Copestetic???

Really?

So I message the band leader and ask what's up with the band name?

He replies "It's Copestetic, as in everything's cool and smooth. Just like us; cool and smooth"

They can't spell the XXXXng name of the band correctly on the XXXXing webpage. No one took the time to google a word they had no idea how to spell.

This morning I sent the BL a message saying i regret that after checking my bookings for the rest of the year I just don't think I have to availability they're looking for at the present time.

Five minutes ago I get a return email asking if I can still come to rehearsal this Saturday. They're auditioning a new bass player and were hoping to double up on the guitar and bass audition at the same time. Dodged a bullet with this one. The bass player that I was stoked about grooving with ain't even in the band anymore.
If the music's good, the band works, what's a name? The music and Green's the reason you play, ignore that part. Just my take.

Ha. My band in the early 2000's was Rhythm Magik. Probably intentionally spelled that way but didn't bother me one bit. I had a short lived band I called Random Axxess.

You passed up some good money, bruh. Either that or you just didn't want to play a bunch of dance cover tunes.
I was in a band called Anna Stetic and the Hart Machine

Chango is independently wealthy.

Chango is a working musician, as in that's how he pays the rent. Chango also has occasional free weekend nights where he gets in trouble that he wouldn't if he were working...

Good money wasn't passed up. The band really doesn't exist at this point. Only folks left are the BL/singer, B=KB, and sax. They're rebuilding from the ground up using the old band name. Well, and the old set list. Which is a casino band cliche to be sure but that just means I wouldn't have to actually learn any new tunes. If it were a 'step in and gig' deal I'd probably be polishing up my white patent leather loafers right now.

@Chango Malo, I'm also a Seattleite and saw their recent ads on Facebook. We must be kindred spirits because the first thing I thought when I saw the name was "Ummmmm... that's not how you spell copasetic." I'm working too much as-is, so I didn't look at their ad beyond that. Looks like it could have been a good gig, but it's too bad the lineup got hit that hard.

Our Company Name is Stripe IT Rite --- we do seal coating and asphalt striping in parking lots and road ways ---
Like I tell folks -- "Our name is STRIPE IT RITE we cant SPELL but we can sure STRIPE"---you would not BELIEVE the number of Gate Keepers that let me pass just because of that little "chuckle" --- lifes hard-- laugh more

I don't mean to bust on you, man, but if you're gonna correct something, it makes sense to be correct yourself :smug:

Nah, man, you gotta use a REAL dictionary, something with some actual authority:

Definition of COPACETIC

Not everything you find on the internet is equally to be trusted. Vocabulary.com has little credibility for professionals in the field. (Editing is what I do for a living.) Merriam-Webster is far more authoritative. So is Oxford:

Maybe an editor should be aware of common alternate spellings of words with ambiguous etymology.

I am perfectly aware of those things; I have to be. The "alternate" in this case, though it exists, is not in fact especially common and is not considered the preferred spelling. Not all alternates are equal either, unless one considers every misspelling merely an alternate spelling. The etymology isn't really relevant, since there's no consensus about what that is.

Lexicographic quibbles aside, if I were looking for a band of the type that the OP was, and I had a shot at a slot in a good band that played music I liked and paid well, I'd take it. Yeah, I'd have some inner, and maybe outer, groans about the name, but if the music and the bucks were good, those would trump the name (which in this case, TBH, I wouldn't like regardless of how it was spelled). Usually, that is; like anybody else, I have my limits. :)
