red flag prior to auditon...

Wait a minute... Are we talking about this band?

Man, they're good. I would love to play with these guys.

BTW, with all due respect, I need to be honest here: To me, this is the oddest reason for turning down an audiction that I ever saw in my entire life.

Grammar issues aside, they don't look like a red flag to me AT ALL. Judging for these videos, their audience had a hell of good time with them.

I would love to have such an opportunity to play with them.

These are the vids that made me say "Chango, you wanna ride that rhythm section like a rented mule".

Only problem is that the band in the vids ain't the band looking for a guitar flogger. That ship has sailed. Only cats left are the frontman, t-bone, trumpet, and kb. Now those guys don't stink for sure, but everyone here knows that it's the rhythm section that makes a dance band. They very well may put together a solid band, but re-tooling a band from the ground up isn't in the cards for me right now; I just don't have the bandwidth to put into that kind of project. They're leaving the website as is for now to hold what contacts/momentum they can and as I said above, I do have the availability to help them work out whatever folks they have lined up this Saturday. And the guys that said whatever bass dude shows up may be a funk monster too are right. Who knows?
The spelling of the band's name on the website did disturb my wa a bit, it's not like 'The Beatles' or 'Led Zeppelin'. I was goofing on it to be sure, but that alone wouldn't be a deal-breaker.

This weekend I heard about a casino band that was looking for a guitar player. Scuttlebutt was they play one, occasionally two weekends a month and got payed casino rates + casino bene's (room, food, drinks.) So I shot off an email, got the setlist (same ol' same ol' casino dance band stuff) and a link to the band website. There are a couple video clips so I take a listen. The bass player is a funky beast! And the rhythm section has a pocket deep enough to smuggle small children! Score! I have a fairly direct, to the point no messing around phone convo with the band leader and everything seems to be "show up, play the gig, get payed, go home in the AM.

Easy Peasy, right?

I take another look at the website and the name of the band doesn't make any sense to me, so I figure it's just a goof I'm not getting. No worries, as long as the Benjamin's are green, right?

Then I realize it's not a joke. The name of the band plastered all over the top of the webpage is "Copestetic".

wait a second. Copestetic???

Really?

So I message the band leader and ask what's up with the band name?

He replies "It's Copestetic, as in everything's cool and smooth. Just like us; cool and smooth"

They can't spell the XXXXng name of the band correctly on the XXXXing webpage. No one took the time to google a word they had no idea how to spell.

This morning I sent the BL a message saying i regret that after checking my bookings for the rest of the year I just don't think I have to availability they're looking for at the present time.

Five minutes ago I get a return email asking if I can still come to rehearsal this Saturday. They're auditioning a new bass player and were hoping to double up on the guitar and bass audition at the same time. Dodged a bullet with this one. The bass player that I was stoked about grooving with ain't even in the band anymore.
Are you FREAKING KIDDING ME????? You pass up playing with a great sounding band that is playing casino gigs for good money and bene's because they spelled their name wrong? What have you been drinkin'?

I once played with a band named "The LA Smogg". We all knew that there was only one g in Smog, but added the second g on purpose because the name looked cooler and was more memorable with the second g. I guarantee you'll never forget the name "Copestetic", so looks like that misspelling worked just fine for them.

Or was this whole thing just a troll to get folks to check out their web site???

I guess we're lucky Jimmy Page couldn't spell.

If you're serious, this may be the best reason for not doing a gig I've ever seen.
:D

Back in the 60's I could've played with a pretty cool band* but they didn't realize their name should've been "The Whom". More's the pity.

Ehhhhhh @ all the hatefire coming down on this.... I know we as bassists aren't paid for our witty prose but cmon.

I have a pretty good eye for purposeful plays on spelling / intentional misspellings vs just plain bad command of the language, and both the written spelling "Copastetic" + the bandleader's response give zero hints at cleverness or good ol rock & roll rebelliousness. Blame my Indo-European linguistics scholar of a mom for developing that instinct.

These guys just spellt* that thing wrong. RONG WITH A SILENT W AT THE BEGINNING.

And honestly, it would bug me. Money or not, I'd feel like kind of a dummy for letting myself be associated with literacy-compromised branding. That said... if the money was GOOD and my name didn't have to be on the poster, only on the checks, we could debate how bugged I'd be.

*For the highly judgmental out there, yes it was on purpose

At least the OP's not alone.

I love this thread.
