REDDI, I'm a bit confused

This is the kind of promo that most companies don't like to see, and I'm guessing you're not doing any favors for whoever makes the P-15. You're not convincing anyone of anything and only helping to foster a adversarial situation.

The level of subjectivity in why people favor one unit or another is obvious. Not everyone wants a DI that sounds like a B15, or an Ampeg, or even a REDDI.

As always people on TB take 'their answer' to be the only answer. It isn't.
You just go ahead make out loud assumptions. Just because I'm a witness to what's the truth you can spin it anyway you want. People might have never even heard of a P-15 before this thread? I can believe that those tuning in are clicking on links to the Broughton right now than the REDDI. Exposure is still exposure.
So use what you want. But if the OP wants a better product for a better price than he knows what's up by now:thumbsup:
Have a good Monday gents.

Bwahahaha.

'better product for a better price'.

Again, someone needs to look up the definition of subjective. I don't doubt that the P-15 is a fine DI/Preamp, all the same. I personally believe they're aimed at different markets.

And yes, I'll assume that companies don't love 'antagonistic endorsement'. ;)

I love how catty this thread has become.

Absolutely It is always up to the client/ producer.. They are the ones that pay us.. We have to deliver and be consistent or they will have the next guy chomping at their heals to come in.
I have had so much trial an ERROR over the decades. Many errors.. My many errors happened because we didn't have the internet the way young guys and girls do today.
We or I had to figure it out on my own.. And that costs money.. And sometimes LOTS of it..

I just try to tell people what i have experienced , so maybe they will be able to put the time into creating instead of shopping.. Don't get me wrong. Shopping is Fun. I am an Official Gear WHORE!!!
But i have found what i like , and it seams my bosses seem to like it to. And it gets me work.. Never Enough .but it gets me work. .

I really want to get a A-Design VEntura.. My friend Steve at the Bass hang uses one.. It is top dog stuff like NEVE, API, fatness with SSL clarity... Well one day.. And then , that just might screw up everything for me:)

In running both Monique Tube DI and U5 in a recent session, it was surprising how similar rather than different they were. I prefer the Monique because of some of the character to what it does...which the engineer/producer on the project read as 'some blurring or distortion really down deep'. I have no doubt that when it comes to it, he'll probably use the U5 track because producers favor certain things no matter how good other things are and tend to work by habit. ;) People get infatuated with things and don't like to venture off that path.

People may also not understand that when you get to a certain level of gear, the law of diminishing returns kicks in. It doesn't mean that the extra cost isn't worth it, it just is what it is.

Im also kind of thinking that your Dingwall into the Monique sounds pretty nice.. Growly too?
One question OT.. String spacing on those Dingwall 5 string basses.. are they WIDE like an Alleva or Sadowsky or slighly more narrow like a Musicman Stingray 5?
I saw Lee's Sig bass and it seems a little more narrow..

I'm one of the clients/people paying for it. ;) I'm trying to play nice.

I knew I'd need to relinquish a bit of the control I normally have when we agreed to work with an 'outside producer'. I have to pick and choose my battles, and in the end have to decide if it's worth making a stand for something that me and a handful of people will notice vs. using my political capital where it probably is best spent... on some of the arrangements and writing side of things. As I'm in the 'deep end' of a specific genre music, I often have a take on things that people who are only on the surface don't get...or as I think of them, dilettantes and philistines.

Steve at the bass hang is the man. He is good friend and knows what is up, not to mention He is always working.

I guess to the OP yeah many people think it's worth the price. Some might not and that's cool. I feel that it is.
I have a few tunes on basswave.com that is just a REDDI and a condensor on a GK NEO 212. Play what works for You, I come in peace.

Cheers

I saw Lee's Sig bass and it seems a little more narrow..

My setup has a little less energy in the mids, so not so much growl (although the bass certainly has it) and more in the lows and low mids. I like the Monique for how it sculpts the front end of the note envelope. My Dingwall is probably a bit different than some, as it has a 2-band with the lows centered fairly low (40hz). My treble control is a neat little custom job that Sheldon did (and used as an option for a bit too) which is a center detent that is boost on the front side but a traditional passive roll off on the backside. I do something that many wouldn't get...I boost my lows, but HPF steeply at ~32hz. The standard string spacing on Sheldon's basses is 18mm.

You didn't ask me, but I'd put the Dingwall spacing on the narrow end of the spectrum. Narrower than Sadowsky or Lakland but a bit wider than MM. 18mm on the 5ers if memory serves correctly.

Its 18mm across the board on the models and lines...except the Super Series, which are 19mm. The bridge system which is designed by the Dingwall shop isn't really conducive to being flexible to string width, although I have an older Dingwall that has a stock Kahler bridge that also feels to be 18mm. Since the geometry on the basses is a bit complex, its sometimes hard to tell what the spacing is...

I was kinda hoping the members of talks could have a discussion without acting like children however if you read the OP i was braced for this

The way your original post is worded wasn't going to have any other outcome. It's the internet after all. I have my suspicions that you knew this at the outset and the thread went exactly how you wanted it to go as evidenced by your language in other posts, like this one, for instance:

For anyone who had helpful/relevant info to add to this forum thank you. For everyone who takes it personally when someone criticizes a piece of gear you paid too much for... lighten up

I like narrow spacing. I've been playing MM fivers for 15 years. That's one (of many) things that appeal to me about Dingwalls.

About 12 years ago I had a problem with my hands (ended up being nothing to do with technique, but that's another story)...but I made a move from a standard 4-string Fender spacing paradigm to the Dingwall 5 strings part of that was to force me to alter my technique to have more control and lighter touch with lower action...and a slightly tighter string spacing intentionally 'enforced the need to play that way. My two basses are set up with very flat necks and low action that many may find uncomfortable. I've had other players them and comment that they couldn't play them. I just re-lowered the action on the latest one even further.

I'm fully aware of what I posted, how it was worded and the possible (and now self evident) repercussions of my statements. Call me a troll if it makes you feel better about yourself, I'm sorry you guys are so crabby about your DI boxes (Or crappy import combo amps or class D junk... a small list of touchy subjects on TB) and can't handle someone being critical of said devices.

However this is the info i was looking for :

The REDDI is actually unique as it is the only tube DI currently on the market so far ( that I know of anyway) that uses a real single ended output transformer. The primary side of the transformer is used as the AC load on the tube and has to pass DC current. This necessitates a larger and inherently more expensive transformer than in the typical circuit used in these boxes which is a resistor loaded tube, capacitor coupled out to a small transformer to balance and drop the output impedance (like the SVT-DI or the Demeter for example). Off the shelf transformers of this type run $200+ and typically don't have the extended low end response of the one in the REDDI.

The majority of the greatest records ever made used a passive transformer
Playing better out weighs the best direct box
Some of these micro's have a decent DI too
Playing great with a REDDI seems to be the best DI based on the majority of this forum assuming you can buy, rent, or borrow one.

Playing like crap with a REDDI sounds like really warm and clean crap.

Gentlemen and Ladies,

We're all adults here. Music is not adversarial. At least it's not supposed to be.

To 10cc, Dave Hill and Primusfan1969, Thank you for your heartfelt input. 10cc, would you be so kind as to post some audio and video of you playing through the two boxes so that we could all hear it? While I would like to take your word for it, I don't know that I've heard your playing on anything because I only know your moniker which is the name of a band or the weight classification for you know.... All of you are welcome to do so, in fact.

In any event, it would be cool to hear the comparison of these (to me) distinctly different boxes.

Thanks for your time.

Stay groovy,

RH
