REDDI, I'm a bit confused

To be clear, the P-15 is not a cheap knock off, if that's what the fine art analogy was inferring. It is a hand made B-15 inspired tube DI, also with a Cinemag OP transformer. At roughly 1/2 the price of the REDDI, new. I used it yesterday and it kicks butt. The three knobs really aren't that hard to "deal with".

I realize that the REDDI has been somewhat of a standard for awhile, but, competition is a good thing, and it's not unrealistic that sooner or later something at least as usable may come out.

Hands down the P-15 is better than the REDDI that's why I bought one. Sounds better, better price, looks better and better customer service.

If we had a clip comparing the two, everybody here would agree. Even the REDDI owners and then everybody would want one and Josh would raise his prices and then you'd be paying the same price for a P-15 as you would a REDDI and the P-15 would still sound better.
You can argue with me all you want about which one is better but your wrong.

Man, its amazing how offended some of you guys get but opinions that don't line up with your own.

So there are units out there for less than a REDDI that deliver comparable quality for less than the cost of a REDDI. I was just in disbelief that its the only unit of its kind out there and so much could be charged for it. For all those who could afford one, i hope you enjoy it and it continues to serve you well.
You guys are funny with this whole "Its a B-15 circuit etc..." No its not, just a tube buffered DI but by all means if the kool-aide tastes good by all means keep drinking it.

Get yourself one and then report back:thumbsup: study this thread B15N Tube Preamp DI Build Report. It might "aide" you.

Oh yeah. You can use it a number of ways. Just as a DI, DI and preamp into a power amp, Just as a preamp to power amp, DI and a clean signal back to whatever amp of your desire.

I prefer LESS bells and whistles.. It don't want all the extra knobs nor do i need it. What i do need is consistency 100% of the time..EQ on a DI is goig to add one more set of knobs to adjust... I don't have to worry about any extra EQ points on the REDDI.. I have Volume which i leave at 12 high all the time.

Personally , I DON'T want a DI with all the extra stuff.. Thats the main reason i got rig of the Avalon..
By seemingly slight changes you make with EQ affect gain staging all the way down the line.. If you have active bass you have EQ there, then you go into EQ on your DI then you have EQ on your amp too? it's a hole digger that you can't get out of at times and just useless for me.
For some people that is fine.. But all that extra stuff adds one more hurdle to have 100% consistency day to day gig to gig... I dont gamble on having it great one day then its different the next day form a sound perspective > id prefer to blame someone else on any inconsistencies, not me.. :)

Meh...I like straw men too. Bass into P15 into FOH & power amp/cab is pretty simple too. Just saying.

I'm really not trying to turn this into a REDDI vs P15 thread. I think the comparison is kinda silly because they do different things and their designers had different goals and intentions for the devices. But if it's to continue, well I prefer my orange to your apple.

every word that you said is fairly subjective and depends on a person's taste ...not based on fact .. TO state that your choice of one over another is 100% OK // But to say that 1 of them is 'BETTER", subjective and not very useful info for anyone..

The REDDI is actually unique as it is the only tube DI currently on the market so far ( that I know of anyway) that uses a real single ended output transformer. The primary side of the transformer is used as the AC load on the tube and has to pass DC current. This necessitates a larger and inherently more expensive transformer than in the typical circuit used in these boxes which is a resistor loaded tube, capacitor coupled out to a small transformer to balance and drop the output impedance (like the SVT-DI or the Demeter for example). Off the shelf transformers of this type run $200+ and typically don't have the extended low end response of the one in the REDDI. Good low end performance requires a lot of primary inductance and you need a large core and lots of wire to get that in a transformer with the air gap between windings required to pass DC and that gets expensive. I suspect that even at volume discounts that transformer probably costs A-Designs 200+ per unit. Then factor in all of the other parts and I'd bet that $300 is on the low side for that product. I've been working on my own unique tube direct box/preamp design and the price of any kind of custom case or even an off the shelf one would put you in the horrors. I'm looking at $120 for a Hammond half rack box, barely big enough to fit the thing into and I will have to do my own machining. Even at 1000 volume, a custom case would cost over $100.

At any rate, whether the REDDI's performance suits you or not is highly subjective but I don't think it's fair to dismiss it as "just" a tube buffered DI box, just as it's not fair to dismiss the P15 as "just" a B15 clone. I say this as a potential future competitor for both. :D

Out of all of these upscale DIs, the Avalon is still by far the most common, followed by the REDDI in my totally anecdotal experience. Every studio I've been to in the past 10 years has a U5.

Your right. But I was using "better" as verb. It has far exceeded the REDDI in which that makes it "Better".

The U5 is an amazing DI - which can also act as a preamp - that I would guess has been used a lot over the years. I still see it in live rigs. It's also amazing how many people think it's a tube DI, or has a tubey warmth to it.

I have yet to try a REDDI. There are a couple of you here that have similar gigs/gear as I do and say that the REDDI is killer - especially for IEM gigs which is what I do these days. I'm still tempted to try one, but I feel like my bass career is coming to an end so it's a lot of money to put out at this time.

You haven't been around here long enough to know some history. So i'll let you figure it out on your own.

you make me laugh with your change ups...
I needed a good chuckle.. so thank youi

Don't get all butt sore because your endorsement brand falls inferior to the P-15 in every way possible. I don't talk double I talk facts.

Now your talking. Sounds like you've come around and now your REDDI to make the change to a P-15. Hit up @Azure Skies to get your order in he's making a new batch. Also don't forget to revisit this thread and post a link to your classified ad where you'll be trying to sell your REDDI.

This is the kind of promo that most companies don't like to see, and I'm guessing you're not doing any favors for whoever makes the P-15. You're not convincing anyone of anything and only helping to foster a adversarial situation.

The level of subjectivity in why people favor one unit or another is obvious. Not everyone wants a DI that sounds like a B15, or an Ampeg, or even a REDDI.

As always people on TB take 'their answer' to be the only answer. It isn't.

I prefer to not waste money anymore.Ive done that in the past so many times. I can only tell folks my first hand experience in doing masters. etc... So maybe i can help them not spend money too.. . I know what works for me.. NOT for EVERYONE ELSE THOUGH/ and that is OK... I'm picking up another neve module next month . REDDI into NEVE is a great tone for what i dig..

In running both Monique Tube DI and U5 in a recent session, it was surprising how similar rather than different they were. I prefer the Monique because of some of the character to what it does...which the engineer/producer on the project read as 'some blurring or distortion really down deep'. I have no doubt that when it comes to it, he'll probably use the U5 track because producers favor certain things no matter how good other things are and tend to work by habit. ;) People get infatuated with things and don't like to venture off that path.

People may also not understand that when you get to a certain level of gear, the law of diminishing returns kicks in. It doesn't mean that the extra cost isn't worth it, it just is what it is.
