A friend of mine did some listening tests in his studio.. I wish i had the original .WAV soundfiles here.
He did his coutryman, a JDI and his new REDDI that he bought after he head mine.
The JDI is nice.. Personally i liked the Countryman over the JDI.. Just my personal taste and what im used to i guess... BUT the difference was when he tried the REDDI.. Much more harmonic content. As if the others were missing something.. I dont know. .The Reddi was sweeter.
After all of the talk about the JDI it just left us flat... And as you go up the neck on JDI and especially the coutryman they seemed to thin out where the REDDI seems to stay full and harmonically rich...
He plugged his Jazz bass into each DI then into a wonder Audio Preamp to RME converters to Nuendo. Westlake monitors and some model Genelecs and his headphones to monitor..

Steve, quite a few of us have tried to have it all with the REDDI, but it just doesn't work that way. I tried running a split signal into my amps, and every time I did, it would make a slight improvement into my amps but it kind of toned down the awesome level into the board, and I couldn't have that. For me, it does the one thing I bought it to do and I'm cool with that. That helps keep the price relatively low, too. And if it were easy to make the amp out sound like the XLR out, I suspect Peter would already be doing it. Anyway, moot point since you use IEM's.

No, unfortunately I was not able to do the ABingen with a band. I only played along with some CDs. I can imagine that the difference would be more obvious in a band situation. It often is. I also noticed, as you point out, that the differences in richness and “heaviness” between the Reddi and the JDI is more prominent in the higher notes. I’m just thinking that even though there is a difference it’s not as huge as I though it would be.

I have a few files with the REDDI - Mind you, these are just files we use to nail down instrumental arrangement, no vocals on them and automated keyboards as well as other insturment parts to mark for final (will use real keys etc in actual production). So you must forgive slight mistakes etc ;) As well, this is just REDDI into garagband, so no high end preamps etc yet. Just a record of song sequences for memory. But, I still think the tone is pretty good for low grade recording method and best heard with phones or full range speakers. Used both my Laklands with no compression or other effects and a very basic bassline structure. So, be nice to me

That is a GREAAAATTTT compressor.... I use it all the time in my rack.... It is so smooth and transparent its ridiculous. Been using it on live gigs too.. I need start posting more photos.....

I have never used the DIST button... I need to call peter and ask about it...
But just running your bass through it with one LED lightig does something special... Not only does it sound great. but it also fits in a 500 Series rack too..

It plays great with the REDDI feeding it directly, since it has plenty of gain on the input and output .. I think enough to drive a tape machine or for sure a poweramp...
I was running my A-Design em500 Gold into it , starting with the REDDI first in line.. But this last album that i did, ran REDDI into the BAC500...
Again this unit is very smooth..

Kirk - could you expand on using a REDDI with the EM-500 gold? I find the REDDI is too hot to run into a preamp, I end up having to engage the pad on the pre. So I just run the REDDI direct into my USB interface these days.

How do you have stuff set when you go REDDI -> EMGOLD?

Sure thing... I always go LINE in....SO I run the REDDI with the VOL turned down somewhat... then into the EM500..If i gain up the REDDI i need to use th e -20dB on the EM500..... then bring up the gain on the gain to drive the recording input.... As you know the REDDI is a DI and needs a little gain up to drive a +4 tape machine etc. That is why i use the EM500 to gain it up...
But the BAC has a huge amount of gain available. So i can run the REDDI directly into it, adjust my Attack and Release as i wish, select the Ratio.. usually about 3:1 and i leave the Side Chain switch to Flat or 1st position.. Then set Output gain to drive Poweramp or Tape machine/ Protools etc. I have experimented with compressing the heck out of one signal and running one no comp too.. It can compress it down to square top if you want and still sound good..

Yes you can run the REDDI direct into your USB interface using the preamp in your USB with no issues.. that would most likely be INST or MIC input .. I go LINE in.. Dont know why.. Its just what i am used to...
But i think i get a great SN ratio.... No one has complained yet. I guess that is the tell tale.. haha

Cool - thanks for the info!

I've been running it at line level, too. I just have to turn the REDDI pretty much all the way down if I want to use an active bass with the REDDI and a preamp (also turned all the way down). Turned up to noon, the REDDI by itself is just perfect into my USB interface...

The REDDI is amazing... Im not bragging at all.. but i have to be honest here. I have been blessed to work with some top dogs in the bizz by luck..Rock and pop some country and recent metal guys... Some are Grammy winning engineers and producers..Im just a workin joe....
Each time i brought the REDDI to a session of a gig.. they wind up buying one... and it replaces whatever their other DI was... It is that good... I think its teh Iron...

Noticing that you use Westone IEM's isn't helping to keep me from trying a REDDI - even though I have my little Nano IEM/DI board all set and working great...

I do like the westones alot.. I like them better for recording than headphones too..They do well as earplugs too.. hahah

Ive also made up a small wired IEM monitor mixer thing to bring with me at times.. sort of a more Me .. works great all on hard wire... I dont own a radio receiver setup. If im on a gig they usually back line them and i just plug in..

Hey guys, I've owned a Reddi for a while now but haven't gotten to use it very much. A couple tracks as we are finishing up a recording project. Very pleased with the results. Like I've read throughout this thread it just sits in the mix nice.
When using the reddi live do you guys still run your pedal chain in front of the reddi or run your bass signal in 1st. What limited usage in the studio I have had with it I didn't run anything in front. Does it play well with pedals. my pedal chain is diamond comp, corona chorus, mxr bass octave, and sonic stomp.
