REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

I agree with Jimmy. Get one Steve. The worst that can happen is that you flip it again if it doesn't do exactly what you want. If you find a used one on here you won't lose any money as they are so popular its almost like currency. When I had mine I only used it through FOH at a large church(with a great sounding EAW system), and it was fantastic. However, so many of my gigs at the moment are Jazz or Pop/R&B/Country in rooms where my rig is the only source of bass that I moved it for some gear I needed. I'll get another one soon though. There really is nothing on the market that comes even close to the REDDI.

Well I made a mistake this past weekend. Felt a little bit lazy for a flight to Hershey PA on Saturday, so I figured they'd have an SVT for me, which has a very good DI, so I left the REDDI at home. And they did, but I plugged it in, turned it on, got great sound for a minute, and then it must have thrown a tube or something because the great sound stopped and was replaced by a low output high distortion sound. So after figuring out that the amp was the problem, the backline guy pulled out his backup...a Markbass SD1200. Decent little amp...not my favorite but it worked and I got a good enough sound out of the amp. But it sure felt like something was missing. If I had the REDDI, I could at least have had awesome house sound, but I had to use the DI out of the Markbass, and I am not a fan of their DI's whatsoever. And while nobody walked out, I left the show feeling like it could have been better if only I wasn't so lazy.

I have another flight on Thursday to Sandpoint, ID, and I will not be lazy this time.

Most people in the crowd won't have noticed the difference, which is what I remind myself of if I slip a note here and there, but I notice. There's nothing worse than not getting to hear "your tone" when your playing...it makes you feel naked...

Never been one for playing to the LCD ;) I figure if I notice, others will, too. That doesn't mean I can't sound good with gear I don't like as much, nor does it mean the crowd will leave if I use it, but I totally believe that there are many who do notice.

Forgot to mention that the SD1200 was the very first micro amp I've ever seen a backline company provide. Clair Bros supplied it, too. I've talked to lots of backline companies and all of them tell me that they never get requests for micros, so this must be a sign that it's changing if Clair Bros has them. Granted, this is the Hershey Park version of Clair Bros, but it's still Clair Bros. Now if they'd just start supplying REDDIs instead of Whirlwind Directors ;)

The Hershey version of Clair Bros? Dude, Clair Bros world headquarters is like a half hour down the road from Hershey. And they didn't really run you through a $50 Whirlwind did they? With all the killer stuff they got? Wow. If yer lazy ass ain't gonna pack the REDDI you might wanna invest in a used JDI or sumpthin'....... y'know?.............just sayin'.

Did not know that about Clair Bros. It's only been in the last 3 years that Clair took over sound at the Hershey Park events we play. As for the Director, I cannot tell you the amount of times I've had otherwise highly professional sound companies hand me a Director or an Imp 2. I ended up going with the Markbass DI. They were totally cool about it, too. Anyway, this is maybe the second time I haven't brought the REDDI since I got one, so I ain't too dang lazy.

I only knew it because last time I was there some Clair guys the soundman knew came by with some stuff for him. That's just brutal a pro audio company giving you a DI you'd be disappointed to get in a box of Crackerjack. It's probably a good thing to be seeing more micro heads being provided though. The DI's in stuff like Genz Benz and Aguilar actually sound great.

Ive done a few shows with Claire Bros before i had my REDDI.. While out on a few "A" type tours They would always use my Mic of choice (early on a 421 and later an RE20) and a Brooke Siren Active DI...
Weeks ago, i was in a rehearsal complex with full PA and lights as we were shaking out our IEM system.. My REDDI was not delivered in time so i used whatever the sound company had.. The singer of all people noticed that my bass was missing and lost and asked about where my red box was...
Anyway,,,, the Reddi is ALL THAT... Even a singer can tell the difference.. ! HA

Hate to say it, but I did it again...this time not out of laziness, but I just didn't have room. We had to bring such a ridiculous amount of clothing for two days in Idaho that I literally couldn't fit the REDDI in my bag. So let's hope my rental SVT works this time ;)
