REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

Shootouts as above are all good for the geek squad fun and games. But to me thats about it. fun and games and not reality.. Thats why i always avoid them, because they are silly... If you are playing back though headphones , you are missing a major part in any acoustic situation/ performance... ...What really matters is using a device in working situations, actual performances with other instruments ,dynamics and placement..... ..
Shoot outs are like putting your car on the Dynometer at an inspection station. Its is Nothing like actually driving the vehicle on the road with people in the car, turning left to right, wind, hills, and traffic...

You're right - there is a difference when the bass is in the mix of a live performance. On the other hand, when you hear nothing but the bass, it's an opportunity to tell EXACTLY how a particlar piece of gear (or combination thereof) is performing. Especially since most of the music we hear is NOT heard live, but is heard via recorded transmission through various listening devices.

I believe everyone would be interested in your experienced ear and telling us what you perceive. No harm no fowl -- after all, it's just fun and games, right? :smug:

These things only get me in trouble because i have low tolerance for silliness at times.. no time for it.. Too many variables to even begin, to want to play a game.. from impedance , performance, speakers on listener side, etc. all masquerading as being scientific which it is not...There is an ok difference between files... but it would help if you dug in when you played... Dynamic Range is where you hear what a REDDI can do..Dynamic range is NOT only consistent Volume... . Its really a wanker waving contest.. . thats the interesting part

OK, thanks. That's a valid point of view. Then again, Tony Levin put in a huge amount of time testing a slew of DIs in a similar manner so obviously there are others who disagree. No one's forcing you to make a judgement on these recordings. But most of us are very interested in aggregating as much objective evidence as possible before spending serious money on professional gear. My little experiment is aimed to help provide some of that.

Knock yourselves out..
Like i said .. try DIGGING In when you do a sound file... Thats where the rubber meets the road... not just plinking around..
Everyone uses that Tony Levin YouTube video as a gospel... Im friends with the studio owner they shot it . We went to highschool together in NY..

You have to dig in... Ive been in session Will Lee and Billy sheehan on a record we were all doing together but separately .. believe it or not, Will digs in harder that Sheehan...
I can tell you from real world experience and owning then selling quite a few high$$$ DI and hoping to save people the trouble themselves if they want a pro audio piece of gear.

I can see everyone's point of view. But I find that many DI's work well and can achieve capturing a good workable signal. What I heard from your shoot-out is that I don't hear massive differences. The Reddi is a great DI. I just like the others also. Anthony Jackson here mentioned he favored the J48. For him its a great DI. Will Lee used the JDI on Letterman. He likes that DI. To me they are all very good. As far as the shoot out I think they are all very good. Just curious which one I heard to be which one . On the fretted Instrument I'm saying a-JDI b-JDV, c- reddi. Maybe reverse B and C but I really think the JDI is A.

That was done on Long Island? or where? That's not Kennys place is it?

OK, time to kill the suspense! :) First off, if you haven't had a chance to listen to the "blind" test - SPOILER ALERT! Immediately click here and go to the original post to test your listening skills and read about the test bed and methodology.

Here are the unmasked results (Sorry JimmyM!):

FrankenFender P-Bass --

Version "A" = JDV
Version "B" = REDDI
Version "C" = JDI

Rob Allen Deep 4 fretless --

Version "A" = JDI
Version "B" = JDV
Version "C" = REDDI

OK, what did you do to the JDI tracks?

:D

My REDDI ate them, bro!

Seriously, nothing at all. There was nothing "rigged" about this - I simply hooked up the DIs and played away. And the JDI was at the end of the physical chain, too! Draw your own conclusions. One of mine is to avoid "religious debating" on the topic of DIs. It's one thing to say this or that award-winning guy loves this or that piece of gear. It's another to trust your own ears. Nothing wrong with any of this equipment. Personally, I happen to prefer the slightly dryer sound of the JDV for the wonderful overtones of my acoustic Rob Allen Deep 4. It seems to have more "real" tone for that application. I slightly prefer the REDDI for P-bass, but it's real close to the JDV to my ears. And the JDV is a heck of a lot lighter and smaller to tote to gigs. Based on your choice, Jimmy, it looks like you prefer the smallest, lightest and cheapest DI in the group! :smug:

Well I guess I did that day. I'll give it up for the JDI. Did a very good job. At the very least I favor it over the JDV apparently. Would I feel the same if they were in my hands? That I can't tell you since I don't have one. But I do have a REDDI and I'll be rocking that big red MF on my gig tomorrow not worrying about it ;)

Go for it and have a good gig! You probably "dig in" more than I do.

just saw this on A Design FB page today.. I have one of the prototype BLUE KGB units.. great SS DI....
Come see us at #AES this weekend! Booth 1015. We're showing off some cool new gear from A-Designs, Electrodyne and AudioLot!
Peter says 'KGB instrument-ins. 1-channel with 3-band EQ and a 2-channel without EQ" I have the one without the EQ
