Redefining a custom bass

This just popped up on my local CL :)

That's about what I'm feeling so far as well. TV Jones is a buddy, so I can always get different covers later if need be.

Regarding gilding...I've been looking at a lot of your work and love the gilding, but can't picture it on this bass right now. I'm glad you're doing this because at some point you just gotta commit. I'd probably just stare at it for years and never be able to decide :)

Ok then, I'll take that as a green light to do what I feel will deliver the ideal look for this bass. With the testament of many years of doing custom work, I do my best when pointed in the direction of focus and left on my own to make it reality. Not to say a clients love of "blue" would be ignored - but if there is a more open request of 'look', it will be determined more by what to avoid than what to specifically do. As in, some people do not like certain colours and as long as I know which ones - I can explore/play with those in the favored category. Gildaxe has become an artistic umbrella for more than gilded finishes since it's inception - it's where my bass designs/concepts now also live. So if a certain bass speaks to gilding, I'll see it and gravitate toward such and love doing so. Otherwise the first focus is always geared to the final gestalt - the 'look', and delivering it solidly and tastefully. If I am successful doing that for myself - I know I will make my client happy since they came to me for what I do. In this regard I am thankful to dukeorock for trusting my vision and giving me the freedom to do what I do best.

Not for this bass, no! I'm more than pleased with the TV Jones pickups in my Drake!

Was just curious about the Delano's in a general sort of way :)

I do have another build in mind, but it will involve Gibson Ripper pickups

As I said - they are great! I've noticed they are used for less traditional bass designs, which is understandable as that oval is pretty modern looking.

P's and J's are iconic for a reason, no denying that. I doubt I'll ever see the day when I don't have at least one good P bass laying around. I always take at least two basses to sessions and a P is always one of em!

That said, if I fork out the dough to go custom, it ain't gonna be a P or J. That's the fun part about Custom to me. I can dream up MY bass. I got the only one, even if that's because no one else would ever want one like it :)

What I aim to do is to create a bass that is not only a one-off dream bass for you, even if no one would ever want one like it - but I want anyone looking/hearing that bass to ask you "where in hell did you get it!" ;)

As always, we're on the same page!

I agree with your sentiments...check off a few things the customer doesn't prefer. Then after that, what's the point of commissioning an artist then telling them not to do their art?

You nailed it big guy. Make it known what you want, talk it over, talk about life to get a feel for the hearts and souls and then let the creation happen. That how mom's bass came about

It plays like a dream and sings as well as she did and playing it at gigs makes me feel like she's there with me, like the old days.

I'm betting this one will sing to you.

Just got the aluminum knobs (from China) - early! They are exactly the same as the ones I installed on my TeiscoT-45bird! (which is great as I totally dig them!) They will rock this bass! :bassist:

I'm sure it will, and thanks for sharing your experience. It's amazing when an instrument feels like a living thing!

I'm dying to see what the finish is gonna be. Are you gonna cover the stripes or work with em? Does gilding come in to play? Gilded body wings with the maple/walnut/mahogany/walnut/maple laminations natural in the middle? I've got a bag of popcorn and I'm glued to the phone!

For sure no gilding - the rest will be uncovered as it develops and popcorn is one of my favorite foods... (I'm originally from corn-country) :)

If the stripes are too bold naked, some semi-transparent compatible color with some glitter under gloss might be something, and certainly in the @JIO wheelhouse! Not everyone wants to rock glitter, but I'm curious how that'd work with stripes.

The gold foil guitar version of that goes for around $300 in good condition. They're often listed as Teisco, but I can't find evidence that they went under that badge, just Kawai, Zen-On, and Audition. I got the guitar version for $30 at a pawn shop and like the pickguard better than the bass versions, so I'm going to make a 30" scale bass with it, but it won't hold a candle to any @JIO creations with that similar shape.

With the trimming of the body, the awesome pickguard and control plate and the chrome hardware, it's already a win for me. I'm content to let Jio decide the rest :)

I purchased lollipop tuners for it. Not 100% positive that was the best choice, but that's an easy swap down the line should I change my mind

Since when are pops ever not the best choice?
