Refinished Wishbass - pics

I kinda' like the back better than the front!

Cool and unique. The work you put into it really makes the wood look great. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as working on it!

Same for me - I've got the curves nice on the neck to body transition - tons of sanding! 'Wood is good too - young man! :D

Utterly NOT my preference for a body shape but the materials they use are quite nice and you put in a lot of effort and it shows!!

2 part question for you: what is the scale length on it and how many frets WOULD there be if it was a fretted model?

It's a 34" scale length and the neck is approx three and a half octaves, so that would mean 40+ frets. I would suspect that the upper frets would pretty much be useless as well as being awfully thin. Anything past the third octave is pretty much useless due to the closeness of intonation - or maybe my fingers are just too fat! (Maybe I need some Tony Levin type innovation?) Then again, the angle and shortness of string to the bridge/saddle makes is hard to play too!

It is solid and useable up to the three octave mark.

FYI: I have found that sanding the nails that have been used for neck markers have resulted in a nice and very uniform silver dot! I'll take some pics of these and post when I get back from this weekend.

Steve W admits that he only does the basic finishing to his basses.

Now, if your are going to do as I did, then you might as well have no finishing, but if you are going to keep it as is then the bit if sanding and lacquer is better than nothing.

They key thing about the Wishbass is you get what you pay for in terms of finishing, although for $300-400 I think considering the woods, etc you are getting one heck of a palette! I'm sure if you wanted to pay, say $600 bucks more you could get 15 to 20 more hours of work on your bass in terms of finishing, but then that defeats what Wishbass is about.

aka Rickenballer 9000. I traced an actual Rickebacker 4001 and he nailed it. He installed my Bartolini MM style pickup and l love this thing. Thick-ass truss-rod-free neck. I regret nothing. I did the finish myself with Formbys.

Here it is amongst the collection:

I personally am not into the styling but...

I LOVE the wood and you did an excellent job on the refin. I would have zero, zip, nada, zilch problem rocking that out for a night! :bassist:

That looks sweet no matter the cut on it!

Well played!

Ox.

The styling is something, which definitely improves in your hands! It is amazingly ergonomic! I understand that from pictures is might look a little funky and as the owner I can also say "ugly".

Wow;
What a beauty! I love what you did with this thing, I just ordered a Fantasy 4-string yesterday, in zebrawood, with NO finish. I can't wait to get it. I also have a Hyper, a Lobe, and a Banana - all recent purchases. The ebony bridge is just the thing too! I am making my control panel covers out of peen-hannered brass and copper in a tear drop shape - they are very kool looking (I used to make jewelry for a living), but the wood cover idea is superb. One of these days I will post pics. Thanks for the inspiration!

Rear one works ok. I use Comfort Strappe which have a fairly narrow tongue, so I can get it fastened and then the strap sit against the top of the curve. Certainly one of the reasons why I used strap locks, like on the rest of my basses, so no chance of movement levering the strap off the button!

I like the lines on this bass alot more than any other Wish bass I have seen and the finish/refinish job was done really well. Adjustable tailpiece/bridges are available for this type of bass and would fit in the small area that is available. I bet it sounds terrific.

Can you give me more details? I have about 1" of space between the back of the pick-up and the thro' holes for the strings. I wasn't able to find anything that would fit in such a limited amount of real estate, even to string regularly and not through bass.

I should have posted a link to the bass tailpiece ebay auction that I had seen. Check the ebay parts section for bass and do a search for tailpieces. I really am not sure they would fit in that small amount of space behind the pickup.

Thanks Keith - I'll have a look but I'm think I'm bang out of space!

Hey Thunderitter, if its not a big hassle, could you break down your sanding/refinishing process? I'd like to get started cleaning up mine when it comes because I know I'm gonna have to LOL. By the way, that bass looks great.

PS. How's the EOTS working out, I really do miss it.:(
