Always loved this bass. IIRC, it`s hand-rubbed stain, right ?

The first coat was hand applied. Several other coats, for the burst, were applied with $9.00 Harbor Freight mini-gun. The lacquer, 7 coats, was sprayed on as well. Same gun.

Am just about to do the finish sanding on another Fury to get it ready to spray. New turbine spray system and the learning curve may be steep. Hoping to have another refinish to post in a week or two. Been posting up this one like a proud first-time grandfather on Facebook for too long. Time for a new one. My compressor pump died just as I was starting to spray the next and it took me time to figure out what I wanted to replace it with. Fuji Mini Mite 3 spray system won out.

Friend's son wants the bass and he wants a three-tone sunburst finish on it. That should be interesting too. The one pictured is a single color burst finish.

I`m in the market for a spray gun, but from what I`m reading, my 2.5 hp 10 gal. compressor isn`t up to the task. Any thoughts or recommendations ? A new compressor is out of the question; would I get by with a HVLP gun ?

You'll never read an official publication that says a 2.5hp/10gal compressor is enough.

In reality, its enough to paint small stuff like guitars. If you wanted to paint a car, yea, your compressor is too small. If you ask my dad, a body man for 40yrs, he'll tell you that you could paint busses all day long with a compressor that small, because in the 70s & 80s that's what he did.

If you just want to paint your bass and maybe do other similar projects from time to time, your compressor will work. You could even use a conventional gun if you wanted to.

No cfm rating on my compressor, nor any info on the webs. Question: I used the formula to calculate cfm. 10 gal tank = 1.75 cft. I used the length of time from 50 - 100 psi = 100 sec. This equaled 5.9 atm in that time x 1.75 cft tank volume = 10.32 cft in 100 sec. 0.103 x 60sec = 6.192 cfm. Is this correct ? I used the 50-100 psi since it was the of course the slowest segment of filling; 0 - 50 psi took 60 seconds. Is this an accurate calculation for spray gun purposes (6.192 cfm) ? If so, what are my options / recommendations for a gun - Thanks !

I don't know how to calculate cfm so I haven't a clue if your formula is correct. That was way over my head! Lol

Since you don't know the cfm rating of your compressor, you can wing it.
Just for example, lets say you buy a hvlp gun. The instructions say to run the gun at 21psi at the regulator. So, what you need to know is how long your compressor will let you squirt 21psi worth of mixed paint and air before the compressor kicks on. If it'll let you go for 5-10min, you're good to go. My guess is that it would. If you use a suction feed gun, it will burn thru air faster, but a good suction feed gun in your situation may not hinder your ability to get the job done. Id go cheap/moderately expensive hvlp, with its own dedicated regulator, filter/trap, and hose.
