OK, good points, but I look at it this way... learn the 10 songs, audition, if it doesn't work out at least you've added 10 new songs to your repertoire.

Still most likely a waste of time in this case IMO. I can learn 10 songs any time I want ... if I see a good reason to do so. And I'll do it well. Not because I'm oh-so-brilliant or anything, but because if I've concluded it's worthwhile for me, I'll put the work in.

Like turf3, I place a value on my time. I don't mind spending it; I do mind wasting it. I derive no real benefit from having spent time working up 10 songs if all I'm gonna get is a bite of a nothing sandwich.

If the cost-benefit equation is different for you, then do what works for you.

Sorry, man. You sound like a lot a drama They ask you to learn 10 songs and you set conditions, then basically tell them you'll learn 3-5 otherwise. Bullet dodged... for them.

Why didn't you just learn the 10 songs and show up ready?

ROFL.

Why are some people so eager to out themselves as clueless amateurs? I guarantee if you've actually done a few auditions you learn very quickly not to waste your own time and what questions to ask to avoid that. Nothing "dramatic" about being professional.

There's nothing wrong with learning songs because you want to. But learning 10 songs correctly can be a lot of work, and if it's not really in the genre you generally play in, and if it isn't going to challenge you in ways that improve your skill, what's the point? I learn new things all the time, but I choose that material based on the likelihood that I'll learn something useful from the experience. I don't have it handed to me by a bunch of non-communicating amateur yahoos from Craigslist.
