Reiner Amplification Gasoline Bass Overdrive

Cool! I tried to put some of the general observations in the user manual to help folks get oriented, but diving in and twisting knobs is usually a lot more fun than reading something unless you’re a total nerd like me.

I like reading, twisting, and asking the designer for their intent. Hat trick

Cut a rough idea, today. A friend sent over some chord changes and some rough strumming and vocals. I got out Maschine and my bass and went to work.
I used my Spector fretless J/MM > Gasoline on lean with gain and octane at 9 o'clock, blend and level at about 1 o'clock > Dunwich DA120 > Logic.

The Gasoline and 120 are both at pretty subtle settings, but it is noticeable when either is off. Really growing to like this box.

Starting to get a handle on the balance of controls. Really impressed with the clean blend. It can sound like the dirt is layered on top if you have the dirt/dry levels mismatched, but once you get things dialed in, it’s pretty cohesive. I’m beginning to think I’m gonna ditch my Darkglass AO. This little beast has a bunch of range to it, and it’s got the aggressive feel I’m looking for. The StingRay 4H and Gasoline seem like a real solid match.

Today, I’m working on more “rock” sounding settings. It doesn’t help that I’m running into my new Quilter, so I’m dealing with a doubled learning curve.

Really been digging the Gasoline with my Nash JB63. Tonight, I popped my Duncan Studio Bass ahead of the Gasoline, and I think I’m really gonna enjoy this combo.

Great point - running a compressor in front of dirt pedals can yield some subtle but cool effects. Still love my Cali76TX.

I’ve found this with many dirt pedals. I really like sending a low gain signal into them. I find higher gain signals going in will clip in ways I don’t like. With a comp, you tame the dynamics, and can control the output level which gets fed into the dirt box. A comp with a dry blend really helps.

The Duncan Studio Bass Comp into the Gasoline is really lighting my fire. It’s becoming quite my home-base feel for my raw tone, which will go to the amp or other dirt boxes. It’s set to be subtle, but I notice when it’s not there.

I find I like the Gasoline into a darker pedal, like the Dunwich ODB or DA120. But, you can't argue with results

I’ve never really run pedals live in many years, but for some reason, it sounds like fun right now for a couple projects. Not very savvy on stacking, but hopefully I’ll figure it out! Have an EHX Cock Fight as well as a Canyon headed my way. Looking into modulation and verb as well just for kicks. Might even accidentally do something that sounds cool

So, I've plugged a Moog Slim Phatty into the Gasoline. I think I I'm going to like this. Need to try again, at an hour when the neighbors are more tolerant of my volume settings and noodling.

I mentioned it in the generic Reiner thread so I'll mention it here: I've really been enjoying the Gasoline. I use the edgier/more present tone from the Lean setting for harder rock: stacks great with my B7K when I want extra sizzle on top. For classic bass tones I like the darker/warmer tone from the Rich setting -- in fact my fancy Blueberry clone is now on the way out (not saying Rich is the same as BBBOD, but only that it works better for me). And Stoich is nice to have, it sits between the two.

Great pedal. Top quality components and construction. Also has a sweet look and feel.

Got my Gasoline last night. Here's what I said about it on a local Seattle bass players Facebook group:

Test results are in: It rocks. No shocker there. I love the way @JGR voices things.

My goal was an overdrive with less color and less overall attitude than my beloved Pike Vulcan. The vintage setting in the manual is just about perfect for me. All I changed was that I dialed the voicing filter (Octane) down to flat. Unity gain, sounds like my unaffected signal, but adds touch sensitive overdrive to the mix. Stoich mode keeps the low relatively clean and still very fat. I’ve had a couple of the other commonly referenced pedals that get heralded for the “transparent” thing. This does that better than any I’ve tried, and has more on tap if you want it. Also, it really warms up my rather clinical sounding Phil Jones D-400 backup head (not needed when I'm using my Reiner Studio 1200).

Absolute winner. Nice job Jonathan. This will be my new all-purpose overdrive, and my Vulcan will be more for the “tear your face off” variety. Together the two are ruthless.

I just received my Gasoline Overdrive yesterday, as well! I was all excited to use it at band practice last night, but then our guitar player got sick, and our drummer called off, so the other three of us went out for beers. I did get to plug it in and fire it up a bit, though, and so far, I'm impressed, as well!
