Remaining G&L Empress Basses

The SB-2T is a "special" model that they did a number of years ago, and all I did was resurrect that model by ordering something like 6 of them. They already had the CNC program done for that model, so it wasn't a big deal for them. The LB-100 would be a more serious change, and I don't think G&L will go for it. Sorry!

Here's one more Empress instrument before I call it a week! This one is a Legacy Special guitar, and it weighs just 6.1 lbs. Congrats and thanks again to bdgotoh!

Are any LB-100s still available?

Yessir! We can still order custom Empress instruments that can be delivered in about 4-6 weeks, or there are these ones available for immediate shipment fresh from this morning's available list:

I'll show all the body woods in case there's a light Ash or Alder one that catches your eye. The Empress ones say Empress in the description. The Ash and Alder ones are implied by the color (Alder under Standard finishes, Ash under Premier finishes).

Thanks for the quick reply. Is there a place to see photos of some of these? I checked your website but it doesn't have all these models there. Specifically, I may be interested in:

LB100 EMERALD GREEN METALLIC MP _EMPRESS BODY_MINT_7.5 7.5 1 CLF073317

Full specs, prices would be nice too. I can figure some of it out from that description, but not everything.

Thanks!

Sorry, there are no photos that I'm aware of. Sometimes they might appear on the G&L facebook page, but you'd have to hunt to find it. Worst case, you can check out G&L's color page to try to get an idea.

Here are the starting specs for an LB-100: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

From that starting point, only the deviations are called out in the item descriptions. A hardshell case is included, as is free shipping. And there's no sales tax when you buy from us unless you are also in Virginia (in which case add 5.3%).

These 3 basses all have the #12 neck, and they would price like this:

LB100 EMERALD GREEN METALLIC MP _EMPRESS BODY_MINT_7.5 7.5 1 CLF073317
LB-100: $1500 MSRP
Empress Body: $100
Emerald Green Metallic: $0
Maple Board: $0
Mint Pickguard: $50
TOTAL MSRP = $1650
INTERNET = 75% of MSRP = $1239

LB100 SUNBURST RW _EMPRESS BODY_#12 NECK_T_7.3 7.3 1 CLF073231

LB-100: $1500 MSRP
Empress Body: $100
Sunburst: $0
RW Board: $0
Pickuard (either 1 ply white or 1-ply black): $0
TOTAL MSRP = $1600
INTERNET = 75% of MSRP = $1200

LB100 TOBACCO SUNBURST MP _MP_T_EMPRESS BODY_LTSN_1/4 SAWN7.5 1 CLF073380
LB-100: $1500 MSRP
Empress Body: $100
Tobacco Burst: $0
Maple Board: $0
Light Tint Satin Neck Finish: $100
Quartersawn Neck: $100
Pickuard (either 1 ply white or 1-ply black): $0
TOTAL MSRP = $1800
INTERNET = 75% of MSRP = $1350

We also like to beat the internet prices, and I'll PM you those details in just a sec.

The K Wiring is a no-charge option for the L2K and L2500 basses which replaces the 2-way switch that changes between Series/Parallel operation for the two humbuckers. You end up with a 3-way switch instead that gives you Series, Parallel and Single Coil (and it's the outer coils of each pickup, IIRC). None of these 3 available basses has it, you would see a reference to it in the description if they did.

The OMG circuit is on the L-1000 basses. Those are passive, and they come with a 3-ways switch similar to the K-Wiring (Series, Parallel and Single Coil). The only difference is there a capacitor in the circuit of the Series mode which rolls off a bunch of highs. So the series mode is much darker on the L-1000 basses. Coupled with the fact that the two coils of each hubucker no longer noise cancel perfectly (because of the cap on one of the coils), the OMG mode was actually marketed as "single coil with extreme bass boost". Pretty funny.

The side jack came up related to the SB-2T model. G&L's normal model is the SB-2 which is a PJ bass that comes with just two knobs (a volume knob for each pickup). So there's no tone control, though you can actually darken up the tone by turning the pickups down. What the SB-2T does is add a third knob for a real tone control. That third knob goes on the pickguard where the output jack usually goes, so the jack ends up getting moved to the side of the body. Some folks wanted G&L to also move the jack around to the side of the body on an LB-100 (a more traditional P bass than the SB basses), but G&L shot that idea down.

Does that all makes sense? Hopefully so, but don't hesitate to ask for any clarification!

Cheers,
Greg

Yes Greg, it makes sense now that you have separated out the mods to their respective basses.
Thank you.

The reason for the question was I do like the weight of the Empress, and I think that I am more at home with a 5 string, and I do like the reviews of the L2500, as well as get close to the Ray tone. So, I had to askwhich mods were available for the L2500 and see which ones might apply.

You've been great Greg,
Thanks
B.

Today I received my first G & L bass in a long time and my first Empress ever.
LOOOOOVE the voice if the Empress wood. As Greg described before it's a pretty good cross between Alder & Ash. Very well rounded low end and while the upper range is not exactly sizzley it does have nice bite too it. I've been playing 5-strings for about 15 years so I was a little worried about getting acclimated to the 4-string neck. Wasted worry....the #8 neck felt very comfortable and in 5 minutes as comfortable as an old pair of docksiders. G & L's assembly & Plek process deliver a bass that is first rate.

It sounds like Monkey Pod is something they just come across every now and then, and they are out of it at the moment.

I asked if I could place a custom order for a Monkey Pod instrument with an unspecified delivery date, and they said they would indeed accept such an order. They just can't promise when they'd deliver it. So if anyone can work with those terms, then it's a "yes"!
