so im kinda of like. are you serious?? people who made a video game about playing guitar..and NOT EVEN REAL GUITAR are saying that theres no use for a bassist. and its like. what the hell would they know??! they sit around and make videogames!!! they dont even play guitar! they have no idea!!! any real musician would agree that a bass player makes a band complete. its not a band without bass. everyone on here knows that..its like please.they sit at a computer and come up with guitar line buttons that stand for a chord all day.yeah. itd be nice to smack some sense into them.

First of all, you shouldn't be trying to offend anyone on here. The fact that it's targeted at a specific person doesn't make it okay.

Secondly I think that the GH load screens were kind of tongue in cheek. They work with some real musicians there, so it's not like they're totally clueless.

Can you honestly say you've never poked fun at your drummer? Told him he could be replaced with a little box with blinking lights, etc?

And, so the guy isn't impressed by the bassist from Nirvana, who cares? You can politely disagree, rather than calling him names.

my apologies man.i didnt know what to say.you know? some times you in a weird mood and you get mad easy and dont think.idc about it now. but its just like, he really has no idea. so ill just leave it at that. and forget the whole guitar hero thing..

One thing that hurt: our singer/songwriter/frontman, a creative, dynamic guy, but not what you'd call a competent musician, once told us: "Anybody could've played in this band. I don't particularly need any of you."

This after all of us more or less dedicated 15 years of our lives to making real music out of his crude home demos and making him sound good. I don't believe just "anybody" could have made a better job of it. The way he sees it is that his songs are perfect from the start and all equally good. But without such a loyal band to take endless care in arranging and pre-producing the stuff I suspect he wouldn't be nearly as well-regarded an artist. I had to cry a little, out of frustration.

while struggling to compose a song my flat mate asks me whats wrong with it, so i start explaining that the frist aproach weits pretty "typical" and i wanted something more challenging to the ears, to express what we wanted and how i tough i could acomplish some self-imposed goals and so on....

he´s not musically trained, yet i tried to explain everything from a personal/emotional way so he could relate, since i respected his music taste and such...

so the guy listents to all my rambling very carefully to answer:

"why do you bother thinking all that, you´re just playing the bass"
he then proceded to make some "dum-dum" walking bass sounds and said...
"you can only play along, but not actually MAKE the music"

:eek:

i was speechless.

BASS RELATED: Any variation of the old "Electric Bass Isn't A Real Instrument" tripe. Got that at least once or twice when I used to do jazz gigs. Dumba$$es! :spit:

And the inevitable "Why don't you play a Fender, maannnnn?" I just seethe with disgust anytime I hear that bit of cretinous stupidity!


GENERALLY MUSIC RELATED:

Played a gig in Weymouth MA once at a rather unique venue (used to be a firehouse and a Masonic lodge at different times, 2 floors and even had the firepole still), well anyway, I liked the owner of the place until he opened his big freakin' trap onstage while introduucing us, and he just RAMBLED on and on showing his lack of knowledge about the band and even saying stupid crap about us borrowing and stealing from other good sources of music (exact words escape me right now it was about 8 years ago). We played our asses off that night and I think the audience (amazingly large considering it was dead of winter and 10 degrees outside) forgot that bit of verbal buffoonery pretty quickly. Some people should just not be allowed near a mic!

Yeah, no worries. I know where you're coming from. I've had people trash on music that I like, and sometimes kind of think *** is this person talking about. Really I think people just hear really different things when they listen to music :)

And I actually kind of agree with you. I'm not a big fan of Nirvana or anything, but I've never noticed anything wrong with the bassist.

I also wonder why Mark Hoppus is always the example that people use of an overrated bassist.

I'm not going to argue that he's great, but I haven't heard anyone explicitly point him out as "a good bass player", and it certainly wouldn't be the "Remark that has pissed me off the most"

He seems to be a pretty solid player, even if his lines are very simple.

Yep, that's why he'll never be a bassist. ;) It's pretty common. A lot of people don't really notice or appreciate the bass.

to me it was when the guitarist in my band who I have played with for 7 years had talked about getting another guitarist for the band and we have had one before and for alot of stuff it helps. But he would keep saying his a really good bass player over and over. Its like I get it, Im a decent bass player I think but his playing guitar not bass and if you think he is such a good bass player just have him play bass. He finally relaized how pissed it had gotten me. Its all good now but at one point I was ready to quit the band because out it. But the guy is a decent guitar player all things considered. The only problem is even with his bas tone its tons of highs, and on guitar it just hurts my ears to much high end is not a good thing.

The worst was at our last practise. Now I can take constructive critisicm, but when the drummer stops you in the middle of the song and tells you to stop "w*nking" about and to play everything low, cos it sounds "sh*t" really pissed me off. This guy fancies himself as a bit of a Jaco, he more or less thinks he can play every ones instrument better than them. Drummers.....

Comments that piss me off the most, is when a guitard thinks that his instrument is the most important in the band, and that bassists just kinda play whatever they want to fill in the background.

But it always makes it better when one of my drummer friends is around. because we both laugh and destroy the guitarist about how drummers and bassists are what keeps it all together. its funny how you can tell who's a real drummer that knows how to do their job just by listening to how they see other instruments, eh?

Sometimes when people see me reading music, they'll ask if I play and I say yes. Then they ask (with anticipation) what instrument I play, I tell them the bass, and they look like I've just destroyed every hope they've ever had in the world....then I meet the people who actually know something about music and upon hearing I play bass, we go on to have a great conversation about it, influences and what not.

It's a joke aimed at the majority of the ignorant, uneducated players of the video game. There are some who are not ignorant who play this game, such as those who play real instruments as well, however there is an overwhelming percent of people who play music games like GH that would agree with such a comment. Really, the joke is on them. The game developers of the original Guitar Hero game are mostly musicians, so the joke is on the players.

GRRRR had someone just today (and he plays bass, guitards, drums, etc after I referred guitar player as "guitards") tell me:"you know what they say about bass players...they play it because they couldn't handle the extra two strings of a guitar"....grrrrrrr
and another person I ran into later on-who used to play bass-told me, "oh it is an easy instrument to learn" after I told him I taught myself and only been playing for 11 mths.
