'whats a bass player?'

i was trying to explain what my bass clef tattoo is and why i have it :/

3) You dont even hear the bass in music.

that one pisses me off the msot. i make sure people hear, and feal my bass ahha

My wife once said that to me as a question "Do people really even hear the bass?".

It was my wife after all so I had to set her straight. I told her that whether people realize it or not, most folks "dance" to the bass line (for danceable music anyway). At a gig, I told her I would prove it, and I did.

At different parts, I would play a sort of swinging, flowing sound - and people started dancing that way. Then I would move to a more urgent staccato sound - and people danced differently. Bottom line is I played about 4-5 different ways, and had a dance floor adjusting their dancing to how I was grooving. She was watching all this and was blown away by the almost "Pied Piper" nature of it.

Now she gets it. Bass brings da'funk

I have this "issue," if you will, with calling my instrument a bass guitar. It's my issue And, of course, I am a bassist, not a bass guitarist. What kinda critter is that?!

Right! Our role in any band (with a few odd exceptions) is very different than that of the thin-stringed midget instrument player, the techniques we employ are very different, and our electric bass, no matter how many strings it's got, was born when electric blues made it near-impossible for the double-bassist to cut through. Our instrument is the electric child of the upright bass, which is a member of the violin family. the electric guitar is the electric child of the acoustic guitar, which is a member of...never mind

I know this is an old post, but what the hell...

The double bass is not actually a violin, but a viol. I imagine it's called a violin because it is "double cello," a cello being a bass violin.

In my band, I make it an absolute point to make the bass the focal point for at least a little bit, with a good lead in or a strong groove.

We turn me up pretty good. Helps that we have a bluesy sound that needs the bass beat.

Anything with the words bass and easy in them, unless refering to an easy bassline, usually infuriate me to no end.
