My bandmates have a long running joke with me where they remark upon all my mistakes and misfortunes with: "that's why you play bass."

None of tha stuff gets me pissed though.

Ignorant d-bag make me so mad, but when you think about it its no their fault. Its society's fault for pumping out this crap where there's 3 guitarists with turned up low ends and all that screaming(plz use discretion, i like to understand the words to a song).

The sad fact is that there are no "known" bassists. Ask any adult to name their favorite bass player. Nobody (non-bass player) has a favorite bass player. Most people can't even name a bass player, with the possible exception of Paul McCartney or Sting. You aren't going to get famous playing the electric bass guitar. Get over it.

funny...before I started playing, I always went for the bass player! to me they were more sexier! I always seem to attract them too...even when I didn't know they played bass..my boyfriend came to me, and started talking to me..I didn't know he was the bassist for the band at the club I was visiting! lol! He just disappeared and then the band started, I looked up, and I was "oh heeeeccccckkk no! not THE BASS PLAYER!!" He didn't know I also played until his next break...so we were more less magnetized to one another!

hey...now my second bass was a Squier Jazz Affinity...it worked for me! Of course you'd never know cause I have been making major changes on that bass..

haha i guess im lucky, when my band plays a show and some fool decides to make any remark about me being a bass player. the band says: thats why you're in the audience and not on the stage, besides he writes all the songs that get the crowd going. this doesnt happen often i usually make it a point to upstage the rest of the members of my band with some definate mudvayne style slap or cliff style facemelter. which is probably why they keep me around. they think i'll kill them. or when im with the other bands i just ask ppl how many instruments do you play? if they say guitar i challenge them to a play off, this has happened twice in which the person actually accepted and they left with their tail between their legs. people often have the guts to talk about it, but they can rarely act on it.

I think that real musicians know the importance of and the skill needed to play bass. Most people doesn't really seem to know what they are talking about.

I would just have to say they way people react to you in general. I was at a family function and people were standing around talking music and my brother said something about a show I had the previous day the family member said oh what do you play? I said I play the bass and he went "oh" the turned to my brother to start talking guitar....

Theres nothing wrong with them. But a 4001 that is like 12 times the price. DOES NOT sound like one. Unless hes heard some really good squiers

I play bass in a punk band. I've had this conversation several times...

Them: Oh, you play bass? What kind of music you play?
Me: any kind of rock, but I'm in a punk band, so that's mostly what I play.
Them: So you don't even have to practice to play punk rock bass, right? You don't have to be good!
Me: *sigh*

What they don't know is that I wrote all the music for more than half our songs and the lyrics for a few of them. I don't know how many times someone has told one of our guitarists "that's a cool riff!", I just stand back w/ my "easy" 4 stringer and smile cause I was the one that came up with that riff, arranged the song and then taught the guitarist how to play it during practice.

I like that this got brought up. I've been playing bass since i was in the 6th or 7th grade. Now i'm 21.

When i first started playing, everyone asked me why i did't play a "regular guitar." I just told them i wanted/liked to play bass. I didn't pick up a "regular guitar" until maybe 2 years ago to try and learn some chords. And the only reason i did that was to move those chords to bass.

There's no need to argue, people just don't understand.

Ah, ignore that one. If you can't express yourself on bass, it's not because of the instrument, it's because of the musician. I say you go play them something nice and sweet, make their hearts melt, then walk away. That'll get it done

For me it's just the countless times I've been told "You should get a REAL bass" or "Why don't you play a Fender". Yeah, just because I don't have a big F on my headstock means that I must play something that's garbage.
