Remark that has pissed you off the most!?

I placed an ad on CL for a guitarist for a cover band that I was putting together. Some dude calls me up and, out of the blue, proceeds to tell me how "successful" he is in his day job and that he "doesn't need to play for money".

I was like ..... "So tell me again, why did you call me?". It was totally bizzare and maddening at the same time.

"If you can't play Detroit Rock City by Kiss, you're not a good bass player." a guitarist said that to me. Since it's the only Kiss song I like, I played it...flawlessly. Even after that I still wasn't "Good enough" to be in a band with the guy. Kinda happy about that since he's into 80's hair metal and that's all he wanted to play.

This thread has some pretty funny replies in it but come on, some people are saying things like bass is superior to guitar... you don't compare instruments that's just silly. But I will agree I hate the comments too. Once, I was with two guys I know who play guitar and don't know a thing about bass. I point to a picture of some school graduates that played bass and said "whoa, three graduates that all play 6-string basses! What are the odds?" and one of them replies "Hahaha, that's just a wanna-be guitar!". That bothered me. I'm both a guitar and bass player and though they may be more skilled than me I like to think I'm above them in open-mindedness.

Today...

I was waiting for this band called New Empire play at my school and these girls behind me were discussing which of the band members was the hottest. They conclude that the "one wearing the singlet is the hottest".

Then the band comes on to play and they realise that it was the bassist, they then say "Ahh why does the bassist have to always be the hot one, it's such a boring instrument?"

I turned around and glared at them for the comment about the instrument... I have no problem with bassists always being the hottest. :)

There are a couple things people say abotu bassists that piss me off ahah.

1) My girlfriends mom said once "dont bassists just stand there with there hair in there face?
2) Whats a bassist? it pissed me off so many people diddknt know what a bassist was!

and the worst one of all
3) You dont even hear the bass in music.

that one pisses me off the msot. i make sure people hear, and feal my bass ahha

One of my brothers says it's easier to write music on a bass, maybe that's what they mean.

The other one said "Good Lord! You've gotta have really strong hands to play this thing!"

For me it's the classic; "Bass... That's easier to play than guitar isn't it?"

Usually asked by some by-stander who has tried guitar and (upon figuring out that they can't play like their hero inside of 30 minutes) has decided to quit.

I always feel like giving a smart ass answer but I always respond with;

"Bass is like any instrument. It's easy to get started and play some very basic stuff. But mastery is something you'll spend your whole life looking for and never feel like you've achieved"

This one got to me, not really pissed me off but it hurt slightly.

I was at work as a cleaner for a resteraunt and I was in the back kitchen and I run into someone who I 'knew' (well he knew me) from school. He was asking what I was doing now I said I went to college doing music.

he said didn't know you played what do you play. I reply by saying bass guitar, he replies by saying whats a bass?

... :(

Ya know that type of "compliment" that's really an insult in disguise?

Well, I still remember one of those from years and years back so it must have really gotten under my skin. I was a teenage bassist with tons of chops and no clue what I was doing with them, when a pro player, who saw right through me, said "Nice Licks" in a subtle, condescending way.

That really ate me up for a long time, but it totally motivated me!
