Remark that has pissed you off the most!?

Can't remember if I posted this or not...our band does its own yearly cruise, and on the first one we did, I had been playing upright for about 8 months. The day after our first show on the ship, this guy comes up to me and says, "Hey Jimmy, you were really great on the upright last night. You're not always that good on it."

So after he was rescued after being thrown overboard... ;)

My friends some time poke fun at me by saying "your the bassist, shouldnt you be ironing my clothes?" or like "why dont you make like a bass and be inaudible." or " I could learn bass in 5 minutes." (coming from the guitarist of course.)

but i dont mind much, because i know theyre wrong :)

Brendan -

The sad fact is that there are no "known" bassists. Ask any adult to name their favorite bass player. Nobody (non-bass player) has a favorite bass player. Most people can't even name a bass player, with the possible exception of Paul McCartney or Sting. You aren't going to get famous playing the electric bass guitar. Get over it.

hm. wrong. flea.

It's true that in the vast majority of cases, playing bass won't make you famous. But it's also true in the vast majority of cases that you're not going to get famous no matter what you do.

It's probably symptomatic of my Spinal Tapped density, but I never thought of the above during any of my too-many "oh #$%$, there Hill goes again" old-friend offending and new friend scattering whine-sesssions Re all those missed (most probably fake) opportunities I had to get "famous" playing bass, opening for x, playing with y. Y'all know the deal.

Thank you: I was blind but I now can see! I have yet to be invited to give a keynote lecture, ummm, anywhere, but I do just fine in Psych because I love it. And isn't that why we keep on playing, barring a few rejects? It's about loving to bassify! :bassist:

Wow. I need to take a power-nap: I'm mentally drained. What an epiphany! I am not being sarcastic.

Happy New Year, JimmyM. Thanks for the gift! :hyper:

LOL Hill...really wasn't trying to be deep. Heck, it took 25 years to convince me of it and I'm still not entirely convinced ;) Just practical. A psych degree is worth a lot more than rock stardom. You can practice psych long after you're too old to have hits.

A month or so ago i was sitting in the hallway of my dorm late at night with my bass (room mate was asleep) some drunk girl and a guy from my floor came up the stairs and she gave me a strange look and asked what i was doing. Once i told her i was in the middle of writing a song she laughed and walked away. I heard her say to the kid she was with "doesnt he know you cant write a song on that..it only has 4 strings..guess he sucks too much at music to play a real instrument... looser". Closest ive ever come to pushing a women down the stairs, bitch

in a former band, our guitarist held a barbecue at his house and we put on a show in his backyard. His cousin played drums for another band who was invited to play as well. The guitarist of that band, after we completed our set, came up to me to start a conversation. He asked how I liked their band. It reminded me of a Green Day/Blink 182 type act. I told him I enjoyed their set. They were tight, and I found out the bassist had only been playing for three months! Good show.

Here's where it went downhill.

Apparently, this guitarist was expecting to be put down and was looking for an argument. He proceeded to tell me that his music was for the market and that my band's music was "too complex to be marketable". Honestly, it wasn't that complex. Then he went on to say "you play your bass like a guitar! what are you doing with six strings? bass was designed with four!".

I realized there was some alcohol influence in his rant so I just dismissed it altogether. Especially when I found that this guy had been playing guitar for 12 years and this backyard bbq was his first gig! tool ;-)

Here's a weird one. My Myspace blog has some "hot topic" beliefs of mine, which I won't discuss here, but I'm always clear that I'm not shoving my beliefs down anyone's throat. Someone from a local band on my friend list randomly decided to read my blogs. He then posted an extremely insulting remark based on the beliefs, either to try and bate me into an argument, or maybe just to show the world how "scene" he was. Thankfully, there's the "approve comment" feature, so I simply denied the comment and deleted the band off my friend list. Given the band had about 20 friends and no songs up, that wasn't a wise maneuver.

Me - 1
scene band - 0 :D

maybe this is just me guys and cuz the style of music our band plays, like rock.reggae.dub.punk sublime ****, but i actually seem to get the most recognition out of the whole band. everyone is always coming up to me after shows and complement my "fatass" bass lines.

I bought a Squier VM fretless a month ago, and when I brought it to band practice, this was their reaction:

guitarist says, "You should've bought a better bass." The drummer agrees. She continues, "I bought my guitar for $2500 in USA, I think it would be best to buy a bass in USA."

The drummer adds "How much did you pay for your basses? Why not sell them both, slap on an extra $150, and buy a better one?"

I bought the cheap basses because I've only been playing for four months, dammit!

I played a Squire bass at a local shop recently and it was a really nice bass! Played well, felt good, sounded good. A friend of mine plays guitar in various local bands and one of his guitars is a Squire. At one of his gigs somebody went up to him and said "well, that's only a Squire, I have a Les Paul custom" to which his reply was, "yeah, but I'm on stage here getting paid". If those Squires feel good to you and you can get the sound you want out of them, that's good enough.

When I was with my dad and step-mum, we went to see some friends of my parents play in a band. They played mostly blue/country sort of stuff, but the bassist (whose name I can't recall so he's called X) had pretty active basslines and the bass was easily audible in the mix.

Anyway, my step-mum looks back at my dad and says "Is X doing much?"

I got a tan from the face palm.

Not bass-related, but I am still bitter.
A female co-worker said, 'Men can't multi-task'.
:eyebrow:
UTTER BS- no matter what else I'm doing, somewhere in the back of my mind, I am always thinking of sex. Bimbo...
:scowl:

When my wife says something to this effect I usually remind her that 'multi-task' is just a term that means: 'starting a bunch of things and not finishing any of it'
