At some point in our lives we realize life is to short to become upset over meaningless comments from someone that really does not matter.

Isn't the point that there aren't any young people aspiring to be bass players in the UK any more, but rather they are aspiring to be :
DJs
Programmers/Sample players/Producers
In boy/girl bands where it's only their looks that matter
Famous for something..anything!!
Bruce and yawnsie - That's really sad, considering that, from my yank point of view, the UK has given us a disproportionately large number of gifted bassists, relative to the population.

I was doing a gig with my band about two years ago, and we were sharing the bill with a band from Athens, GA., which is something of a musical hotbed (R.E.M., B-52s., etc.) I was wearing this T-shirt I got from "The Onion." The T-shirt says "I am in a promising local band." Very tongue-in-cheek. Well, this girl from the Athens band walks over, reads my t-shirt and says "A little pretentious, don't you think? If you wore that t-shirt in Athens, you'd be run out of town."
She was a girl, so I didn't smack her.

Something which recently annoyed me was in an interview with the bass player from Travis (A feeble Scottish band who are inexplicably popular in the UK) talking about when he was asked to join the band, even though he couldn't actually play an instrument at the time:
"I wasn't bothered about not being able to play, I mean, it's only the f***ing bass!"
AARRGGHH!!!!! B(
The bass player from one of the biggest bands in Britian (really!) saying something like THAT! What sort of example is that to set to young bassists, I ask you?
